Best Headphone Amp... Around 1k range...
« on: 17 Nov 2005, 05:32 pm »
Any suggestions out there? I have read the headwize forum a little bit I can't get cohesive opinions.

I am looking at Headroom, and Samuels, MF X-Can, and a few others for good headphone amps.

I am going strictly headphones because I don't have the time or space right now for a stereo set up.

Cheers,
Bill

The answer depends entirely on 2 things:

1.  Which headphone(s) will be used.
2.  Are you willing to buy used.

Headwize is basically a dead site.  Go to www.head-fi.org and look in "Amp" section or pose your question with your specific headphone.  You will get a mountain of useful, first-hand user information there for your particular headphone.  Oh, check their "For sales" section also, which has many good deals on used amps on a daily basis.

i would not ask this on headfi, headfi is a great place but there is alot of personal feelings in the amp section also...

I have been called a rsa fanboy many of times there so...

the best advice is to listen for yourself.

Headroom has alot of options for their amps. the thing that puts headroom apart from a few others is there crossfeed. I am not saying is great or anything but just they offer it on their amps where others dont.

Samuels or RSA is My fav but I dont want to say anything in a form pf opinion here. Ray offers a simple and un-optioned amp. you can call or contact Todd the vinyl junkie which is Rays Dealer and Todd has a 30 day return...   toddthevinyljunkie.com

Meier audio is another company for you to think about. Jan builds and sells headphone amps from the germen lands. offers crossfeed.
btw: todd has a loaner program for Meier amps to..anyway

theres also

Headamp.com
Justin is known for making some great amps..

Singlepower
tubes and loads of options here

Eddie current also
some say best bang for the buck amp

there are others..I need to leave now

Here is a suggestion.
You keep your rwa monoblocks, and buy a pair of akg-1000's.  Many people at head-fi use modded sonic impacts to drive akg-1000's, and are happy with the results.

Of course, the 1000 is not your typical headphone, so this is a risky approach.  But, I love my 1000's, I do most of my listening with them, as I have no place to set up my speakers at this time (my wife kicked my stereo out of the living room)

I just realized he's trying to sell his Red Wine Audio mono's.  I second the recommendation that he should keep the mono's and look for a used AKG K1000.  With a little bit of tinkering, one can even use "regular" headphones with these amps.

A top-tier headphone amp will cost way more than what the Red Wine Audio amp can fetch.
