Does anyone know if any of the recently talked about all in wonders have two channel analog outputs? The Panny, the sony's or others?

The Panasonic XR45/XR25S both have tape inputs and outputs.An external processor could be inserted here.

Hey Josh,
The Sony's don't have a pre-out per se...but they do have the equivalent of a tape output and an optical output.

Any idea why these wouldn't have 5.1 analog inputs? Cost reasons only, or maybe Sony doesn't want to encourage people to use a DVD-A player? I have a friend with an Outlaw 1050 receiver and he's also using a 3 channel Sherbourn 3/900 amp for his fronts and center..... and I was suggesting maybe he trade all that for one of the C70ESs and get money back in return (and better sound?), but he has a few DVD-As and likes them.

Also, someone mentioned they don't get very loud and can max out the volume. This guy listens to music and movies at probably over 100 db with somewhat efficient 2 ways. Think that'll be possible with the C70?

The upper models in the new Sony line of ES Receivers (with Digital amps) have multiple multi-channel inputs ...allowing for DVD-Audio and SACD. And, I think, on those models, one of the inputs is 7.1 So, maybe it's a matter of cost why there's no 5.1 input on the all in one units.

If I got one of these new Sony all in one units, I'd probably sell my DVD player (which does DVD-A) and just playback the 5.1 mix on my DVD-A discs. Having the 5.1 input would be nice; not a deal breaker for me.

mine arrived last night, but unfortunately i had almost no time to listen to it. my brother hooked it up to some ancient b&w 202's, and for the few minutes i heard it i thought it sounded pretty good. better than i remember my denon avr-3300 sounding with the same speakers. it'll be breaking in over the weekend with those speakers, and i'll probably hook it up to my Ref 1's sunday night and post my impressions soon after.

build quality is definitely better-than-expected (except for the power cord), but after seeing the pictures of the 700es it looks kind of cheesy & dated.

I was thinking of getting the S50ES for a friend who wants a $1000 two-channel system. With some Axiom speakers, I thought this would be great.

He doesn't have a TV, tho. What programming is involved in getting this machine to play just 2-channel? What about if the power goes out--will he have to borrow his neighbor's TV to get it back to 2-channel operation?

there was a button on the front that let me put it into 2-channel mode.

mine's not hooked up to a tv yet either, but operation seemed pretty intuitive for the five or so minutes i spent with it though.

also, the 70es wins the award for "stupidest looking remote. ever."
on the other hand, besides the ugliness the remote does seem to be pretty decent ergonomically and it has a backlit lcd screen.

I've been using my Sony 3000ES for a couple of weeks now. Although it hisses at high volumes, I usually listen at night at low volumes so it is not an issue.

I tried out the Panny XR45 last night (results in the Panny thread), and after I was done with it I fired up my Jolida 1501RC. I haven't used it since I got the Sony.

I was not all that impressed with it anymore. I have NOS Sylvania Jan 5751 tubes in it, and the sound just didn't impress me like it used to. After a few tracks I know very well, I swapped the cables back to the 3000ES and I was in audio heaven again.

I said it. I like a product from Sony more than my Jolida.

Note: I ran the 3000ES without the sub for comparison's sake. Being able to use my sub is an added bonus of the 3000es. My Sapphires sound much better crossed over.

Now I just have to wait until the 15th when my replacement 2000ES shows up (I don't need the extra features of the 3000ES).

I assume the all-in-one units are just as good, with the added benefit of SACD. If the 2000ES hisses I will definitely be looking for an all-in-one to purchase.

Oade is now advertising the AVD-S500ES and AVD-C700ES on its web site. For the 700 go to http://www.oade.com/Home_theater/sony/sony_es/avd-c700es.html. Haven't talked to them so don't know is they are really shipping or just gathering advance sales.

Unfortunately, the prices of the new AVD line in Canada will be significantly more than just the difference in the exchange rate between the US and Canada:

AVD-S500ES

$1400 CDN - 75% more $ than US when Exchange rate is only 40%

AVD-C700ES

$1700 CDN - 70% more $ than US when Exchange rate is only 40%

According to the Sony Store in Etobicoke (an ES Dealer), the S500ES should be in store Mon Oct 20. There's no release date yet for the C700ES.

Sony Canada's explanation of the price discrepancy

While both countries may have the same model and look the same the governmental Radio Telecommunications departments and electrical standards departments requirements are different in both countries.

The Canadian models are specifically designed for the Canadian market and meet CRTC and CSA approval to be sold in Canada. Internally this product is what we call a CA2 version. The American version is a U2 version. We can't by the U2 version...if we did we would require to modify the unit electronically to meet the governmental agencies approval at a substantial cost.

Other...we don't buy with US volume and at times are subject to pay more for certain products. Tokyo must also prepare documentation in both languages as well as carton etc.

Warranty is also and issue as a product purchased from US will not have warranty in Canada since it does not meet the governmental requirements.

Canada
The AVD-C700ES and AVD-S500ES receivers are available immediately at Sony Stores, authorized Sony dealers or online at www.sonystyle.ca and have suggested list prices of $1,699 and $1,399, respectively.

Just called oade.com.

They are hoping to receive the new Sonys (the AVD-C700ES and AVD-S500ES receivers) in about ten days. They're knocking about 20% off the list.

Just to be clear, I have no affiliation with the Oades, but have purchased from them in the past and they are an excellent company. They claim that last year's models, in many ways, "blew away" other equipment in their showroom.
