Well, I haven't seen a DVD Player that didn't hesitate for a long time on DVD's. It has to read in all that information, so to build the selection menu. I've heard that the Esoteric DV-50 is very fast at this, however my Toshiba DVD Player, usually takes about 45 seconds or more, before I can even select a menu option.

It's not a hesitation before the menu comes up. The picture freezes and the audio drops out during playback. It's definitely not normal -- you can't watch a movie like this.

Oade is cool about it, by the way, if I don't want to deal with Sony service I can return it for credit toward the new unit. I need to do some more research.

I received my 3000ES yesterday. Summary: so far with 2 channel is sounds incredible. It is very smooth, detailed, the soundstage is wide and has pinpoint accuracy.

I did not A/B compare it to my Jolida 1501RC yet, but it will be interesting.

Are you talking about a hesitation every time the DVD changes chapters? I had a cheapie ($200) early generation DVD player that did that-it also had a lot of trouble reading certain discs. After a year or so it did an unlamented death.

If that's the problem, I'm guessing its a problem with the DVD transport mechanism, which should be curable under the warranty.

The hesitation isn't during chapter changes, it's just throughout playback. We're talking about repeated picture freezing and audio dropout. It was so bad that we only made it through about 15 seconds of playback.

I'd feel better about the conclusion that it's the DVD transport if there were also CD playback issues, but there aren't. Anyway, it's definitely under warranty and Oade is willing to do a refund. I'm pondering -- I'm not wild about the prospect of repair for fear that the problem will return later.

These were from my 400 disc changer via optical. I did not try my Music Hall CD25 via analog or optical yet. I use my 400 disc changer as a place to keep my CDs. I figured with the digital processing inside of the 3000ES I would try the POS 400 disc changer. It sound incredibly good. I am hoping that Friday night I will get to A/B against my Jolida. I have a switch box to change between the two and I might even be so anal as to use a voltmeter to set the volume levels (instead of a SPL meter).

Flame Suit On! I wouldn't want to take any bets against the SONY at this point. Especially after it was fully broken in.This should be an Interesting
comparision as Jolida's have a reputation for good sound.

I am not expecting miracles from the Sony, but I was very, very happy with what I heard last night. I actually dislike Sony in ways. Most of their audio equipment is garbage that people buy just because 'It's a Sony!"

I have had a LOT of receivers in my system in the past year. I guess you could say I have been looking for the "holy grail" receiver that does HT and can still do music well. I purchased the Jolida 3 months ago, so obviously I haven't found that magic product yet. I pretty much gave up until this new Sony came along.

I have had:
Denon 3803, Elite 45TX, NAD T752 (sound great, but died a quick death), Rotel 1055 (very good, but had an issue with optical inputs from my satellite receivers), Yamaha 1400 (purchased one week ago). The Yamaha is my current receiver, and it is great for HT. If the Sony does not work out, my system will remain the Jolida and Yamaha.

If I read correctly your problem, I had a similar issue with a Phillips SACD 1000 where, for no reason whatsoever, the picture/audio would freeze for about 1-2 seconds during DVD playback. This would happen only ONCE per movie and between chapters of scenes, usually towards the end of the movie. I had to send the Phillips in for repair. I also bought the Phillips SACD 1000 at Oade..............I always frazzle and wonder about how ground shipping electronic products can do damage in some form or other.

As for my Sony C70 ES, I have never had one issue with it (i.e. no picture freezing). It has been bullet proof through lots of movies and loud music.

What a machine!!

What I recommend is to see if OADE can exchange your unit OR give you credit for 2 way shipping and credit towards the new upcoming units.

As a user of many Sony ES products over the years, I have always had great experiences with reliability and performance. I'm sorry to hear when a person has a lemon with any brand or model, but that is the crapshoot with electronics of all sorts these days.......Plus the frazzling shipping! Have you ever seen UPS guys handle stuff in their warehouse?

Good review. I concur with your statements. Keep in mind the unit keeps on breaking-in well over 150+ hrs (to be conservative). The sound is truly fantastic.

There is indeed a paradigm shift taking place.

For those sitting on the fence, I would suggest to make up your mind soon. These units are at AMAZING price at this moment and are being discounted by retailers to make room for the new models.

The pricing doesn't get any better than this folks. I paid $750 for my C70ES way back when. Even at $1000, it's an absolute steal.

Also, adding an IEC outlet and after-market power cord will make quite a difference..man..you guys are getting me excited..I am waiting for the 500 or 700ES or the DA3000ES receiver.

BTW, audiojerry, did you connect this to a power conditioner or not ? Did you test with any analog inputs ?

Anyone out there who has studied the nature of the S-Master Pro upgrade and Direct Digital concepts have any thoughts on the relative merits of a receiver, using coaxial digital input, and opting for quite abit more power/better PSU at about the same price, versus the AVD? A receiver would have a little LESS going on in there, although the sacred signal path would be somewhat compromised; then again, it is artfully handled by the amp architecture. Hmmmm...Something to consider....Let's have some opinions on this. I want to make a decision which one to sport for.

Note: The AVD and DA/DB series are beginning to hit the streets in the UK and EU right NOW!!!

I think whenever you talk about a two box solution, jitter becomes an issue. Since everything is in the same box in the Sony, jitter in it should be VERY small, if they did it right.

I am waiting for the Sony Pro stuff to come out, so Ric can tweak it, and then I can find out how good this can really be.
