Balanced Sub Output on the Sp1.7
« on: 11 Nov 2005, 11:53 pm »
Hi..

Does anyone know why if I use the balanced sub output each time I change inputs it causes a thud from the sub ?

This does not seem to happen when I use the phono connections.

I am hooking the Sp1.7 balanced to a Velodyne SMS-1 whic h in turn is connected to a Velo CHT-12R.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt

The same thing happens with my 1.7 , this is why i use phono connections.
I believe any one that uses balanced connections turns the volume down if they are changing inputs.

The common factor seems to be the velodyne then as i have a DD12.

Either that or its just a quirk of some units , as my sp1.7 has many others.

Since my DD-15 shows the same behaviour when connected via XLR to my SP-1 PRO, this seems a possibility! I haven't connected the sub using the unbalanced connection, though.

The thud is there every time the relays in the SP-1 switch. Considering that this happens a few times on my unit when I watch a DVD (e.g. when the digital formats change, the processor does the relay blues between analog an digital inputs...) this is not really adding to the movie experience.
 :?

Has Bryston ever investigated a thud-issue in conjunction with Velodyne subs then???

This is exactly what happens! and it doesn't help when the digital lock on my unit doesn't work , which makes the relays shatter alot.

It used to annoy me that much i considered selling it !

Well funny enough the digital lock on mine does work.. so its silent when flicking between sound formats on DVD.

So for example, it will go from DD 2.0 to PCM when it flicks then to DD 5.1, and each time I get the small thud.

I wonder if its the DD software ? As I am using the SMS and then its unbalanced phono connections to the CHT.

An idea of why it happens would be good. I may switch back to a phono connection to the SMS for the time being.

Cheers

No problems with a Rocket UFW-10, hooked up by balanced line (4 m Monster Pro) from my SP-1.  But, I haven't optomized it yet for my new place--gain is set pretty low.

WelL I have returned to using a phono interconnect and retired the XLR cable until I get hold of a suitable poweramp to use balanced cables again.

Silence has been restored :)

Cheers
