"It says LO. If it says anything other than LO, we will remove one child from the table and check again. There's apple pie for dessert, by the way. What does everyone think?"
"I think that meter is going to be found at the bottom of the river in many small pieces, very soon. Just a guess, though."
However, I have heard of them being used to rate motor noise from motorcycles, the neighbor's barking dog, and girlfriends. (I didn't ask for details on the latter, because, damnit, there are some things I just don't want to know.)
They are generally useful devices, notwithstanding.
