Best Cheap CD/DVD unit?
« on: 15 Sep 2005, 06:57 am »
Hey guys

Right now I just purchased my first pair of loudspeakers.

Onix Rockets 550s :o).

I was just wondering if there is any relatively cheap -100sih range of any good cdplayers or dvd players?

Right now I'm having a mother of a time with this stupid player I use.  I currently use a TV/DVD combo in one unit. So yeah, any help?

Hi truway,

Definitely check out the new Toshiba 3980 (mfg July '05 or later)...which you can get in Best Buy for around $65.

They brought back the metal enclosure, updated the power supply board, and this is a very quiet machine and sounds quite good for the money.  I've modded a few of them and they end up sounding excellent!  Louis of Omega Speakers is using one now and is really impressed  :P

Good luck,

Hey Thuway,

You could step into SACD for the same price as Vinnie recommended on the 3980...  with the Toshiba SD-4960.  Got mine for $47 delivered from HH Gregg.  I think everyday pricing is $57-59 something like that.  I am very happy with it even stk.  Like to have a the metal case but oh well.  Happy listening.    :D

Well I am just trying to enter the realm of audiophilia, but I can defintely tell my transport is a weak link in the chain.

If I purchase the Toshiba do you think it'll make a noticable differencce or one of those minute audible differences.

BTW i'm running a panny xr-55 and I'm surprised at this reciever after the burn in, it sounds so much better.

Well Thuway,

I a am not running mine through digital outs.  I have it paired with a JVC RX-F10 with coax in the DVD/Multi mode (Outstanding).  Plus with SACD it really works out well.  If you're using it strictly as a transport I'll be quite truthful I have never hooked mine up through digital outputs.  There's that age old argument that the Panny's are strong through the digital realm and the JVC's throught the analog (DVD/Multi).  I have a Panny SA-XR10 but I like the JVC better through the DVD/Multi than I like the Panny through the digital.  Personal preference I guess.  These Toshibas have pretty decent DAC's but it's purely subjective.

I have spent $47 dollars on a walkman for cripes sake so I am going through that giddy stage listening to the performance of this unit for that kind of money!!!!  Whatever you do if you are really looking for value under $100 you can't go wrong with the 3980 that Vinnie recommended or SD-4960 at even a cheaper price.  Good Luck!!! :P

I believe the samsung 841 and the 4960 are essentially the same unit.  They both can be modded, do a search here at AC.

the ONLY thing stopping me from purchasing the unit is on the basis that it doesnt have upconversion for my DVDs.

What do you guys think of the Sony DVD/CD/SACD 400 disc changer ?

rosconey's sub-rosa...time to take back america...seems
like a good idea to this mind...

America is not so much a fixed place...an object..as an idea...
that idea is that we each care for everyone in our society with affection
and that each citizen has access to their rights and freedoms and other
benefits of an egalitarian principled classless society...

America to this mind is a living thing...not a fixed and static series of rules
bogged down by its ruling classes...

I would like to see more caring...more fluidity...more creativity...more
expressions of freedom...something awake to the needs of the less
fortunate among us...

Warm regards -Richard-

Sorry....couldn't...help....myself   I just bought one of the Toshibas at Best Buy for 50 clams and it sounds great. Who would of ever thunk that 50 bucks would buy you a progressive scan dvd player with great cd sound? Thanks for another cheap audio find Vinnie.

I have a Toshiba SD-3960 and it's pure crap in a lot of ways - runs hot, slow loading, slow searches, skipping or stopping once in awhile with movies and Redbooks. I realize they change things around in the same model run without telling anyone, so that my experience may not be typical of all 3960 units, or of all Toshiba players.

The 3960 is not bit perfect, for example. I wonder if the other Toshiba players are bit perfect. That would be a fairly basic requirement to get a rec, let alone the usual raves you hear online about all sorts of things.

Did any of you Toshiba owners bother to check?

I don't know about Toshiba ,but I have a Pioneer Uni Player which was touted and the Video Playback is the worst imaginable.

I was hoping that the Toshiba would be as great a deal as all are making it out to be.

I might try one as it cannot be as bad as the Poneer for Video playback.

I have a Panny Changer which puts it to shame.

For music I use an Old dedicated CDP. The Freq. Clock for MP3's is why most are horrid for music from what I understand.per JA of Stereophiles findings.

Which Pioneer is that? The only Pioneer I found to be horrid video-wise was the Elite DV-38A. You'd think a $2,500 player wouldn't be bad, let alone that horrid. All of the $200 or less Pioneer's I've played with were much better video-wise than that turd. Got rid of that thing as quick as I possibly could.

I've not yet played with the recent entry level Pioneer decks though as I'm more than happy with my current deck and no longer need to keep trying out different DVDP's. So I can't comment much on their performance.

I think he meant the clock for MPEG VIDEO decoding

Pioneer 578A I bought a yr. ago.I use it in the second systen in my bedroom for video. I bought it mainly for Music Playback due to it's ability to play all Music formats, but have not used it yet in my main system.

What I was saying regarding the Music payback of DVDP's is that they suffer due to their use as MP3 Players.  Master clock frequencies required by MPEG screws them for Redbook playback.

The problem is that the master clock frequencies required by MPEG
video decoding are veryy different from that required for CD playback.
So, with the majority of the DVD players I have examined, their
noise floors when playing back CDs are contaminated with enharmonic
rubbish. In the worst case, this reduced dynamic range to less than
14 bits' worth, ie, audible degradation.

The best DVD-based players, like the Ayre D1x, the long-
discontinued California Audio Labs CL-20, and the Linn Unidisk did
not suffer from this problem, but are/were/are not cheap. :-(

I have just received the Toshiba 3950 I said I was buying, and will
be putting it through its technical paces in the next couple of days.
