What happened to bybees in speakers?
« on: 26 Aug 2005, 02:04 am »
I've noticed a lot less talk about them recently. They used to be the hottest thing on the block. Has anyone stopped using them for a sonic reason, and if so, could you provide some detail?

Whenever I get the scratch together for my next pair of speakers, I was thinking of getting some bybees installed right at the driver (single driver speaker)...if there is a reason not to I was wondering why.

Thanks!

I can't think of a reason why not to.  I put a pair in a set of Moth Cicadas to excellent effect.

Used them in conjuction with a pair of Walker Ulimtate High Defintion Links.  Very nice combo.

I've got 'em in my speaker cables right at the binding posts as it wasn't economical for me to put one on each driver (9 Bybees across the front if used one per driver/3 Bybees used with one per speaker).

I like them quite a bit.

It'd be nicer if I could have one at each driver though...

I also use them.

When Wayne @ Bolder modded my Panny Sa-XR70 digital receiver he installed one on each of the main pair of binding posts (+). I am very pleased with the result.

I installed four large in my two way Borealises about two years ago and was very pleased.  As I remember...  spatial details were most affected so, now that these speakers are heading for a second systm, I'm very tempted to try removing them from the mid-bass drivers and re-installing them and two others that I have at dc power inputs of my amps.  Two or three months from now they'll probably end up at the terminals of my new speakers   :D

On caveat. I'm sure they work wonderfully in speakers that can tend to be overly revealing, or possibly bright on the top end. Unfortunately that means most speakers these days, especially ones with metal domed tweeters and some ribbons.

If your speakers are smooth sounding or rolled off already then the Bybees are probably going in the wrong directlion for you.

Good luck,
Bob

Like Bob M said, if you like the speaker the way it is then just leave it becasue I tried the byees and they roll-off the highs in my system.  I didn't like the sound at all.  But I can see if my system was bright then the byees would help.   I ended up using them in my power supply.  It really depends on your current system and how your speakers interact with you room.

BobM and kenk -

Are your comments reflective of the original Bybees, or the newest "Slipstream" version, or both?

Thanks!

Hi brj,

I was using the old version, not the slipstream.  I did not even know they have a new version out.

Ken

Brj,

I use a silver slipstream for ribbon tweeter on +, a Large on ribbon mids on + with a large on the collective ribbon return at the binding post.  I use a large each on + and - of mid woofer.  I don't have any on the bass woofer.  You can't use slipstream on mid to large woofers due to current limitation.

I had a slipstream I tried on my tweeter (Scanspeak 9305) and it was too rolled off and soft. Now it's pretty soft to begin with so it didn't work for me. I then used on on my digital interconenct to the DAC and the other in my preamp power supply.

Don't know if there was much improvement there. I already have power conditioning for th system, but I had them and needed to use them somewhere.

Enjoy,
Bob

Bybees are definitely something one needs to try in their own system and in several applications to determine their benefit , or lack thereof.

My own system has had many mutations.  Most of the time the Bybees have benefitted the system when put somewhere in the audio chain.  But I cannot say every time they have benefitted my system.
