I am a new member who just bought a vintage NAD 2200 power amp. What would be the best preamp to pair it with?……. Thanks

Hello,

I recommend the nad 1155 preamplifier for your amplifier. I had this combo way back in the 1990s.

Maybe a good tube amp with 6SN7.

The NAD 2200 amp is probably pretty good sounding, I would guess warm and a little rolled off in the highs. The speakers you have and the budget will determine the preamp. I would get a newer preamp, the preamps from the mid 1980's are on their last legs. A rebuilt Conrad-Johnson would have that vintage sound.

I had a NAD 7155 receiver for forever. I bought the receiver new in 1985, about the same age as your 2200 and I would guess the amp topology would be very similar. After the pre-amp section died I used the amp section with another pre-amp. I discovered the NAD pre-amp was the weak link in the receiver. The amp section was fantastic and a true classic. NAD really goofed up with this receiver. If they had put more effort in the pre-amp section this receiver would have easily competed with the best separates of that era.

An Adcom GFP-555 preamp would be a better choice than NAD if you want to stay in that late 1980's era, Nelson Pass consulted on the preamp's design.

VanAlstine Audio has a used FET Valve CFR preamp for $1,695.00. This is a tubed preamp but without the traditional tubed sound like the C-J would have. The NAD 2200 would be totally outclassed but the combo would sound amazing. The AVA preamp will last for 20 years or more, long after the NAD has died and be the anchor of your next system. When the NAD 2200 is finally replaced with a newer amp you will be gobsmacked to discover how much the NAD was holding back the sound.

Something old, something new.

I'd pair it with a WiiM Ultra. Built in streaming, room correction, equalization, subwoofer output, arc input, phono input, analog input and optical digital input. List price is $329 but with Amazon Prime Days coming up I expect it to be 15-20% less.

If you don't need phono and arc inputs and subwoofer output you can get the WiiM Pro Plus for $219 list.

Both have a configurable remote.
