In the past I've used the term 'going ape' for guitar solos, drum solos, keyboards, even bass solos. Songs like 'Child in Time' 'Loves No Friend of Mine' 'Anya' 'You Fool No One' by Ritchie Blackmore for example, he goes ape, IMO when done right these are great solos!
Great solos though are usually improv so the Artist doesn't always nail it.
