REL planar subwoofers - anyone heard them?
« on: 26 May 2026, 02:22 am »
YouTube just showed me an announcement ad from REL on their new planar subwoofers... looks to be an entire line... many sizes & options...

Curious if anyone has heard these & what you think...

Info on Rel's website https://rel.net/pages/product-comparison

There are 2 models. They appear to be thin subwoofers with smallish cone drivers, not planar drivers.

I like the concept, the Planar PL-2 is -6 dB at 24 Hz, in room. That's low, not many audiophiles have heard tight, true 24 Hz at home; and I'm not talking about the flubby home theater 24 Hz a big ported sub produces. REL is known for quick bass that can blend with true planar speakers so I would assume these subs will be quick too.

Planer is a shorter, better name than "FlatPiston LongThrow Dipole Speaker" which, when turned into an anagram is: "Planar Tones — Soft Highs, Wide Pole, Toolkit." Neither name rolls off the tongue as easily as the shorted Planar. I think REL used an anagram finder.

Perhaps I posted to the wrong 'circle'. Since they aren't actually planar.

But, they're dipole? Really?! Interesting.

I thought GR Research had the only open baffle subs available on the market.

I have a set of 'Double Trouble' ... cannot believe how much they improved my system... got 1... was better... year later got a 2nd... this is a case where 1+1=4...

Have developed a bit of an itch for music with some low bass... not, dance, hip hop or even a lot of pop... though I like pop... l like Nenad Vasilic for example.

The REL are in a similar price point to the Double Trouble.

Be interesting to do a heads up comparison.

Just a skinny reflex (w PR) enclosure that use bondary reinforcement.

Nothing revolutionary.
