Retirement is coming up so time to divest myself of some excess stuff.
One thing I have is a lot of headphones (too many) so time to see how these things stack up.

For the conventional headphones, amplification is my trusty old Woo Audio WA6.
It's not the best thing out there but I have an attachment to it.

I always use Zappa's Apostrophe' for testing sessions as it's so well recorded and there's an awful lot of stuff going on with it.
Up first were some Beyerdnamic Amiron Home headphones.

Bass was kind of heavy, the overall sound was a bit muffled and distant.
Comfortable enough, though.
NEXT!

Up next was a pair of 600 Ohm Beyerdynamic DT990s.

Sound was better than the Amirons, a bit bass heavy, decent midrange and treble but not quite there as the whole presentation was a bit distant.
These are very comfortable headphones, the ear pads are great.
Maybe that's as good as regular headphones get?

Let's try some Sennheiser HD650s.

Much more betterer.
Not as comfortable as the Beyerdynamics but the sound is much more immediate with great midrange and upper end clarity.
Top end appears to be a bit "hot", bass seemed to be appropriate to the recording.
I think the sound would be more fatiguing over time than the DT990s, though.

Let's see how they stack up to my old Stax Lamba Pro with the Stax STM-006tII amp (tII as in two tubes).

These are the top dog.
Comfort is decent, they don't weigh much, soundstage is just right and top to bottom the sound is spot on.
The downside to these is they're fairly fragile compared to the other ones listed.

If I didn't like that Woo amp so much, I'd sell off the others and stick with the Stax Lamba.
As it is, I'll keep the Stax and Sennheiser.

Thats a nice collection of headphones you got there Steve. I never did get a chance to hear any Stax headphones over the years.. I'm thinking of going to the Can Jam this November in Dallas Texas, Dallas is only a 5 hours drive from me. I've gotten back into headphone listening lately. My favorite combo currently is the Sennheiser HD800S headphones and the Woo Audio WA2 amp..

Ever so often I get all gung ho about other headphones but always go back to the Stax.
I have a set of SR-L500s upstairs and the old Sigmas in a spare bedroom.
I honestly can't say there's much of a difference between the Lambda pro and the SR-L500s (at least to my ears).
The Sigmas are like being 15 rows back, center seat.

If you hit that show, give us your impressions.

So you’re going to thin the herd?  Are you planning to be busier in retirement than you are now?

In the year I’ve been retired my late night habits have gotten worse because I’m spending more time with headphones than I have since I was a teenager.  The difference is the headphones are a lot better and I’m sober.

Tonight will start with Zappa. Thanks for the tip!

Steve,
Have you done any safety or sound quality upgrades on the Stax STM-006tII amp?  I have the original SRM T1 and recently started the process to switch the plate resisters to CCS.  I had a chance to listen to a SRM T1S, with SR407 headphones, that had the upgrade.  It was really an improvement in clarilty, bass definition and drive.  There are some recommended safety mods to isolate, and protect, the headphones from failures in the output and bias. Pretty simple just a safety resistor before the outputs.

I have SR307 and SR-L700 MK2 headphones, both easy to drive as they are Lambdas. I am excited to finish the CCS concersion.

Cheers,
Geary

I would sell all the others HPs to made cash to buy a Repair Kit for the drivers at STAX, just in case, or at least new pads.

I sold off most of my headphones and a lot of other gear when I retired and I've regretted it ever since.  I don't mind that I sold the Grado wood bodied RS-2, very good phones, but I never warmed up to the fit or the Grado house sound.  I really miss the Beyerdynamic T-9's, perfect in almost every way.  Sounds like you don't love some of those phones, but from your description you might want the Woo and the Sennheiser in future years.
