Poor functioning tubes for RB10 preamp
« on: 21 Apr 2026, 07:09 pm »
It’s been a few years since I purchased the preamp from Frank. I changed my speakers from 85 db efficient to 102 db efficient.  I now hear some noise at idle and in between tracks.  I figured because it has been a couple of years, it was time to get a new set of tubes to replace the originals.  I placed an order for stock JJ replacements and received them in a timely manner from AVA.  When I installed the new tubes, the output was significantly different in each channel.  Both channels were significantly lower than the tubes they replaced.  I have put the original tubes back in, as the new replacements were unlistenable.  I sent an email late last week to AVA regarding the new tubes and I’m awaiting their response.

Should I consider other tube choices than the stock ones that were used by Frank and team to voice the preamp?  If so, which ones?

Rest of the system: AVA Set 120 amp, Pi Seven Cornerhorns, Merason Frerot DAC, WiiM Pro Streamer, GR Research Servo Subs, dedicated listening room.

Are the tubes they sent you different from the originals? If they're the same I would think they should behave the same way and if not something must be wrong with them, or perhaps the noise you've been hearing isn't from the tubes at all, but something else. In any event I would call AVA because waiting for anyone to reply here could take a long time.

Replacement tubes are same make and model that originally came in the RB10.  I will give them a call.

Isn't the SET 120 an integrated with volume control + source selector?
I'm just a lil confused why you are using a preamp with it.

I think you are referring to the Set 120 control amplifier.  I have just the version that is just the amplifier without any preamp functions.

Ooops......my apologies!   I didn't realize the Set 120 was available as amp only.
