Is the DAC2 not a digital preamp?  Just a dac?

The DVA Digital Preamplifier is simply a DAC that like many modern DACs has an attenuation/volume control. The new DAC2 is the same and can be used in "digial preamplifier" setups.

Can someone explain why it can be better to use a DAC with digital volume control vs. a dedicated preamp for streaming? I always thought there was information loss or a lack of dimensionality when removing an analog pre.

Considering that the DAC ICs used in the DAC2 and DVA Digital Preamplifier are both 32-bit devices, you've got around 12 bits you can throw away before you can even start to talk about whether the digital loss of information is audible. That 12-bit margin covers 72dB of attenuation. In practice, the DAC2 gets used at around 24-30dB attenuation (i.e., 4-5 bits), easily within the "you don't need to worry about it" range. Also consider that most of what you listen to will be 16 or 24 bit signals, which offer zero information in the bottom 16 or 8 bits relative to the 32-bit conversion.

So, you needn't worry about digital loss of resolution in any reasonable situation. What you're mostly left with is the overall linearity of the DAC conversion, i.e., its analog performance at low levels. In both theory and practice, the linearity of the DAC2 and DVA Digital Preamplifier at typical listening attenuation is comparable to analog preamps. So, whether you prefer the sound of a setup with or without an additional analog preamplifier in the chain will most probably be down to whether you want the colorations that are present in the analog preamp.

First of, congratulations on the AXPONA showing. Been looking forward to the new product announcements.

Like the M225 and M750 - Are we able to see some photos of the inside of the new FVA1?

Any chance we get to see the insides of the new speakers? I would love to see the crossover!

Jim,

Can you say whether the speaker is going to have a grill?

On the ASR photo is looks like maybe the cabinet at the show was a dark stained walnut...might this be an option?

How soon before you might be ready to provide more details and take orders?

Hi Ron,
When we envisioned the L1, we did not consider it having a grill, but we are thinking through how to incorporate one before launch. There is a bit of a philosophical debate going on concerning grills here... All the electronics/cabinetry/waveguide design is completed, and we are working thru finishing approach and options. At the show, the front and waveguide were maple, and the cabinet was MDF. We are likely going to offer maple veneer for the sides, and based on appetite, expand to other wood options.
We still plan to launch the product formally this summer, and should have more details within a month.
Thanks for the feedback.

That waveguide provides a nice aesthetic effect exposed as it is. A smallish bare woofer is no big deal these days. I would not want a grill option unless the design was with a grill in place.

A darker finish on the face plate would be a more appealing option for me in lieu of trying to retrofit a grill.

Since after spending untold thousands on your products and coming on here and praising your stuff, and I am not worth a reply, maybe I’ll stop doing that. Maybe there is a reason that you don’t want people to see the crossover. Thinking about going on USAudiomart and dumping all my AVA gear!

Hi there NIGHTFALL1970,
I'm sorry the lack of response to your message board post frustrated you enough to consider selling all your equipment. The reality is, we've been finalizing all the production design for the L1's - including the crossover - so the lack of specific response to you wasn't personal in any way. I just interpreted your request as "Once you are ready to launch the speakers and are providing details, from a marketing standpoint, it would be great if you included internal shots and something on the crossover" not "can you send pics of the internals and the crossover now". In other words, I thought it was a suggestion you were sharing with the community, not a specific request demanding action. We'd be happy to share internal details in the next few weeks as we have production crossovers completed and fully finished cabinets.

Thanks
Jim at AVA

Just wow.  The last couple weeks here on Audiocircle has been something.  Im at a loss for words at the impatience, unwarranted frustration and level of threats.  The proposed ends people are saying they intended to do is deeply troubling.  Talk of selling entire systems off.  Threat of black balling a brand over a photo.  Trying to destroy the reputation of a company over a week long shipping delay in a uncontrollable supply chain.  Losing mental stability over lack of a posted reply for a week on a message board.   Life should not be such a struggle guys.  Listen to some music and enjoy your system.

I was not threatening anyone, I was just disappointed in not getting any response from a company that I have supported for years and defended on this board multiple times over the years.

Also, a friend of mine did sell off all his AVA gear saying that AVA is done and won’t be around to service his gear anymore, and I argued against him.
