Newbie to Headphones, go easy on me please
« on: 10 Apr 2026, 02:44 am »
Howdy,
I have been on AC for ages, and moved out of my house and am awaiting a new home for my system, in the meantime, I want some headphones, but I do not intent to go down the slippery slope of Morgan of old....ie I want a headphone and an all in one system for my desk so I can listen while working.  FOr reference, my home system is Spatial X-3's, and I prefer OB sound, a touch or two of warmth and likely listen to low to medium volumes.....with that in mind, what can I get used in the $1500-$3K range...and please lets don't discuss Separates, cables, upgrades etc. I have $50k in gear in my storage and do not want to do that again!! I have been traveling for one year and my JBl and iphone have been my sources, so anything above that is gonna be killer.   I love AC cause I know you guys know the gear better than anyone...tips on new vs used Headphones would be great, but definitely prefer an all in one unit for the AMP/DAC/Streamer...I know I am probably forgetting something, but open to all of your feedback...what else am i forgetting to ask?

Unfortunately I cant recommend you a integrated amp/dac/streamer.
I will recommend just a HP and a amp with modest prices and great value.

HifiMan Ananda Nano $319 new, dont know the sound character of this HP.

SMSL H300 amp + pre-amp 10W at 16 ohms $295, great bass and smooth sound.

I use IPhone+ Fosi Audio DS2 Dongle DAC Headphone Amplifier + AKG K371 HP. I am very happy with ref quality sound.  Streamer is IPhone in my case and volume is controled either by phone or by Fosi DS2. Total cost is around 200 USD.

Here are two headphone ideas:

Sennheiser HD650 They've been around forever, and pretty much do no evil. They're not bright nor are they super revealing. I've had a pair for 15(?) years, and still enjoy listening to music through them. I keep them in my Taiwan system/desk system.

Audeze LCD-2: I really like these cans. Power them with a nice HP amp and decent DAC, and there's nothing these headphones can't do. I have these in my home's desktop system. They're a bit on the heavy side, but I really like how they sound.

thank you, I know your audio tastes as we have traded a few amps:-)  What amp / Dac do you like with the Audeze?  I know amp pairing with HP can be tricky with certain HP's

I took a look at USaudiomart this morning, someone has a pair of Stax SR-009s for sale at a good price and you won't find anything better than that.
You'd need a dedicated amp, though, and you said that you don't want separates.

I can’t recommend an all in one, especially with a well regarded headphone amp section.
I’m in the middle of auditioning a used Meze Empyrean I.  I like it as a good compromise between the spaciousness of the HD 800S and warmth/intimacy of the LCD3 that would have been and may still be my second choice.

I also own OB speakers (and in fact, used to own the Spatial X3's before moving to the Line Force OB line arrays).  I've tried a bunch of different headphones, my favorite are the Meze Empyrean's.

Here's a thought (though your budget migt be a bit bigger than mine):

Headphones - Sennheiser 560S

Headphone Pre/DAC: Schiit Fulla E

Source - Wiim Mini, optical out to the Fulla E.

The Wiim Mini gives you a lot of connectivity.  It connects to my iPhone, Android and Apple tablets, and Daphile.

The Fulla E is discontinued.  The Fulla is similar, and there's also the Schiit Gunnr, albeit for about $100 more, and likely more capable. Regardless, the Fulla E does a great job for my purposes.  Music, audiobooks and video all sound great.

The Sennheriser were a good fit for me budget-wise, and I think they sound great.  They seem to me to have a very balanced sound (not bright).

The modest cost of this setup belies the great sound it can produce.

@Morganc :
About Audeze consider the LCD-2 $995 (wood ring) if you want a more transparent sound and the LCD-2-Classic $800 (black magnesium ring) if you want a warm forgiving musical sound character.

With Audeze price level you always will be paying factory XLR-4 balanced cables and fancy travel hardcase, what seems desirable IMO.

The other more expensive Audeze models dont have the price/performance value of the LCD-2 Line, in this case your could be better served with an HifiMan Arya or Arya Organic, however avoid the HifiMan Unveiled Line due the lack of dust filter screen.

A very quick snoop through the audiomarts for headamp streamers...
FiiO R7 on USAM for $400
Burson Conductor 3 for $1400 CAD on CAM
Matrix Element X for $1550 CAD on CAM

Headphone acoustics are highly subjective which makes recommendations very difficult because literal ear shapes and ear canals are so different. Speaker impressions can vary a lot from person to person, and headphones are even worse than that. That said, I will echo the suggestions for Sennheiser HD600/650 or Audeze (LCD-whatever fits in your budget). They are relatively "safe" choices, the latter moreso.

Personally I liked the 007 more than the 009, but yeesh getting into dedicated stax amps is a whole different ballgame. There *is* the iFi iDSD Phantom which is a combined streamer/dac/headamp/electrostatic-amp all in one, but you blow the budget on just that piece before the headphone.

Another option is a normal integrated streamer/amplifier (or perhaps grab one already in storage) and getting a low sensitivity power hungry headphone and running it directly off the speaker taps. I did this for years.

Yeah, I do like that Kootenay 120!

The Audeze are paired with a Tom Christiansen Audio (TCA) HPA-1 headphone amplifier that I bought back in 2019. [It's a keeper.] It doesn't include a DAC, so I paired a TDA1543 based NOS DAC with my HPA-1. Together, they give me a very nice, warm yet clear presentation. The DAC is no longer made - it's a dB AudioLabs Tranquility USB DAC.

I've used my HD-650 headphones, my Audeze LCD-2, and a pair of HD800 HPs with the above combo, and the LCD-2 standout as the most enjoyable. The HD800 headphones sit in a closet waiting for the LCD-2 to die [They've been waiting forever...and I may someday sell them.]

thank you!  that makes perfect sense, leaning to the Audeze LCD-2 now combined with an HPA-1, that is right in the sweet spot price wise
