Used Classical CD pricing?

Used Classical CD pricing?
« on: 27 Mar 2026, 01:53 am »
I'm intending to sell off my classical CDs, because I use a streaming service that has almost everything, and we are planning to downsize. In attempting to price the CDs, I have been surprised by used prices now on Amazon and Discogs. Things I didn't think I'd be able to sell are listed for sale (used) at $20, $40, and an 11-disc set at $175.

Is this indeed what discs are selling for now? Or are these wishful thinking?

I would appreciate any thoughts!

At these inflated prices I would sell my collection also.
Back in the 80/90 I bought them for $25/30 each overseas.
In US I remember they were sold for $10/15 new retail.
On sale it costed considerably less, especially if pop music.

I went to Zia Records recently to find out what they are paying for used vinyl. I also browsed their bins looking at prices. Zia sell used vinyl for $4.50 per album. Desirable or rare cost more.

CD's sold for $5.50 each, it didn't matter if they were rock, jazz or classical.

Zia would pay me $1.00 per album, based on their pricing I would probably get $1.50 - $2.00 per CD

Thanks for the info.
So you think asking $4-$6 per disc for items cherry-picked from my large collection would be wishful thinking?

CDs are becoming the new vinyl.
They are becoming vintage and many will be rare.
They are better sound than Cassete, MP3 etc
If you can dont sell them.

I have no idea about pricing. I ripped all my 450 CDs 15 years ago, since a month ago they have been all boxed up. Last month I decided to pay it forward and gave them all away to a friend who still uses a CD player.

Used CDs are like used cars, everyone thinks they are worth more than they really are. My brother still has my Mom's 1984 Monte Carlo, he tried to sell it a few times but no takers at his asking price. But he is always hoping to make a killing selling that car.

My local record store buys vinyl and cd's at about 10 cents on the dollar.  If he sells a cd for two bucks, you'll get about 20 cents for it.   Vinyl about the same.  I'd try to pick out anything that you know has higher value and put it on Ebay or Discogs.

CD sellers on Amazon and Ebay are living in an alternative universe as far as I'm concerned. I don't know anyone who'd be willing to pay those prices and when I've seen individuals trying to sell cd's for similar prices on audio websites they sit unsold. Just because someone lists things for high prices doesn't mean they actually selling them. In central Florida, few retailers have any interest in buying used classical music in any format. I've been offered 25 cents at local retail outlets for classical music I see retailed for $20.00 on Discogs. I imagine most classical listeners these days feel the same way you do about streaming and the market for classical music in physical media just gets smaller and smaller. Rock, pop, and jazz may be experiencing a revival of interest in cd's but I doubt the same thing has filtered into the classical market yet.

Thanks, all, for the thoughts. I should have known that asking audiophiles anything, I should expect a diversity of opinions. I'll just work it out with the potential buyer.
