Suggestions for a side mount to hold my turntable cover

djbnh

I've an audio rack with the top shelf 3" thick, remaining shelves are each 2" thick. I'm looking for ideas for something suitable to attach to the left side of one of the shelves (preferably w/o any drilling) to safely hold my turntable dustcover w/o scratching the cover. Here's an image of the rack w/gear. In advance, thanks for relevant ideas.

Right now I'm looking at reworking a couple of Senn. padded HH 10 Headphone Holders w/o the bottom knurled knob to see if they might work. The distance between the top and bottom HH 10 pieces, without the knurled knob, is roughly 2" wide, so they could slide onto the uppermost 2" shelf - but unfortunately they don't clamp securely onto the shelf. The HH 10's padded headhone cradle could support inside surface of the dustcover, and don't seem like they'd scratch it.

Would this give you a wide enough opening to clamp to the top or middle shelf?

Doublej, thanks for the link. EDITED: I checked the measurements and at its widest it is 1.77", which is under my required 2" at the widest opening. Thanks for thinking of me, much appreciated.

Another option is to start with the pieces of a cable organizer. For the one below, if the 13.38" basket is short enough to hang the cover on, you could add felt where desired. Or you could just use the shelf brackets and fasten L brackets from the hardware store again adding felt to them.

One more possibility. Use two spring clamps though I don't know if they would leave indentation marks in the shelf.

Maybe something like a couple of lengths of 3/8 or 1/2” dowel rod glued into holes drilled into length of 1/2” x 2” wood mounted to the top shelf with double sided mounting tape.

I've always heard that dust covers (especially when attached to the plater) act as a sail catching all the sound vibrations. Although not as impactfull, hanging the cover off your rack may do the same thing.
Have you considered attending a bracket to your back wall? Then your mounting options may be different for your solution.

Why complicate things?  Maybe just lay cover on the floor....behind the speaker (or along inside edge)?  It's what I do.  Simple no cost solution.   Keeps it out of the way, zero risk of damage.

Your carpet will protect it.  Photo shows no foot traffic there.  You can lay cover on side to minimize floor space usage....if it's an issue.

If you must mount it,  maybe a couple of flat bar braces, 12 inches or so,  attached to shelf underside with double sided mounting tape, and protruding out.   Can hang cover on those.  To protect cover, can soften the braces by gluing on felt, or thin foam, or similar.  Cheap solution.  No damage to rack.

This is similar to previous post that suggested dowels drilled and glued into wood block, and mounted to shelf underside.  I like this approach, but it's a bit more work.  Cost is likely similar.

I agree. Just find a safe place out of the traffic pattern in the listening room and lean it against the wall. Hanging it on or near the rack just creates another obstacle that could easily get knocked off. I definitely wouldn't modify an attractive rack to accommodate it.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful suggestions, much appreciated.

Unfortunately, putting the dustcover behind the speaker doesn't work for a number of reasons including but not limited to: way too little space (granted that's tough to judge from picture), heat baseboard, Qualio IQ speaker rear port/ speaker cable & connections, etc. Speakers are dialed in great for the listening room: I've got a killer soundstage front/rear, side/side, height, so I'm loath to disturb that balance.

I definitely don't want to drill into the walls or the racks, so attaching something that would mar their respective finishes is out. I'd like to keep the dustcover close to the rack for convenience. The rest of the room has been evaluated and reevaluated - there's simply no convenient nor non-room-disturbing location. Out of range of the picture, along the right side of the room we've numerous plants, and tons of album storage. I've a very small footprint table that I've used on which to place the dustcover; I'm looking for something more convenient / way closer to the turntable - thus the solicitation for thoughtful input.

I've used a non-abrasive cloth on the carpet directly to the left of the rack, and placed the cover on its side there. Not ideal and I'd hate for it to tip, albeit I might be concerned about nothing. I'm well cognizant that the more restrictions I (and my wife!) have regarding the room and its current layout, both physical and personal, the less choices exist. I've a couple methods that work for now; I'm still hopeful there may be something better that I've not considered.

Thanks again to you and the others for your thoughtful input, much appreciated. Your comments reaffirm the strengths of AC's members and their values. Happy listening!

Left speaker.  Remove red plant.  Place cover on its side between speaker and rack.  Tilt and lean it onto one, if you fear it toppling.
Plenty of room, unless the photo really deceives.

Is it really as complicated as you make it out to be?

You can always put the cover in a Trader Joe's canvas bag and hang it on a door knob or in a closet.

Tried this with what I think is a similarly sized Aldi shopping tote, lined it with a thin felt blanket (will cut down later, the Mrs. can tack it in the bag for a clean look). Fit (barely) like a glove, with just enough handle length to loop one handle under the other to hang it off a closet doorknob. Considered upgrading to a more sturdy tote, perhaps one slightly more generous in proportions including the handles. I also realize I previously hadn't provided the dimensions of my dustcover: 16.25"D x 19.25"W x 8.5"H. She's pretty hefty, too.

Based off your idea WGH, I found this item, it has enough room and it can be rolled out of the way. So that might work as well.

WGH, thanks for the simple, genius hack. I've been trying to come up with a way to: not scratch the dustcover acrylic, keep it safe, maintain the existing audio setup, etc. Thanks so much for the ideas / help!

I use these lined and quilted covers from https://www.digitaldeckcovers.com/ for all of my gear. They are fantastic to work with and very reasonable. I also have one for the TT dust cover, but just don't have a handy picture of it. TT dust cover stays flawless.

You probably thought about this already, but why not clear some space on the wall rack behind/above your equipment rack to put your turntable cover there?
