Does the NP1 Run Hot?
« on: 14 Mar 2026, 10:00 pm »
Hi,

I am considering diving into my first real HiFi set up and am looking at the Vision Preamp and the NP1 power amp. How ever I may need to put the gear into an AV furniture cabinet for the wife. So my question is does the NP1 run warm or hot where this might be an issue?

I've been designing an audio cabinet for my components. Comments I received recommended a minimum of 2" clearance around 4 sides and top for solid state components. Vent holes in the back panel are also helpful. Do you expect to leave cabinet doors open when playing music? That will also provide some ventilation.

The cabinet I am looking at has a horizontal slot on the back has 2 by 7 inches slots for venting and cables. I don't think the height and side clearance will be an issue. This will be used with the TV and stuff as well. It's a combo set up for tv/music so we definitely would not always have the doors open on the cabinet.

Guess I'm paranoid from all the old Denons I had that were always kept in an open stand but died anyway.

I reviewed the NP1 for AVA and it does not get too hot.  But if you have concerns get a Class D amp.

This and a Buckeye are basically what I'm trying to pick from. I lean more to classic AB though so want to try and see if it will work.

What Buckeye are you considering? I have the Purifi stereo and monoblocks. I absolutely love them!👍

Whatever you do, don't even think about driving Philharmonic Audio BMR Towers with these!  <BIG wink>  Inside joke...

I'm a diehard separates guy, but this has me wondering how the Vision Preamp/NP1 would compare to the CA-1.

Sorry for the sidetrack.

Chanur,
I forgot to ask you about what speakers you will be using.

I think that I would prefer the Vision/NP1 combo.  The CA-1 is very nice sounding but the Vision preamp will be the game changer.

I would certainly consider a Class D amp in this situation.  Another option if you need to use a cabinet is to bet a computer fan that runs off usb and you could use it as an exhaust fan in the cabinet if that is possible.  If size is an issue, look at Bel Canto.   They make great sounding gear and built in Minnesota like AVA.

What speakers will you be using?  If they are very efficient, then a Class AB amp should be ok.

Guess that would help but, it is the Philharmonic BMR Towers. 6 ohm ish and about 85DB sensitivity.

I was also looking at the top buckeye purify Monoblocks and the Stereo. As much as having Monoblocks would be awesome, I would probably get the Stereo as there isn't any real advantage to the monos I don't think.

I have mine in a 30 yo BDI cabinet. Open back, vented top, vented door and it gets moderately warm after all day use.

Active ventilation instead of passive ventilation! My mechanical engineers for equipment cabinets on my former engineering projects always said to use fans to pressurize, to maintain higher oxygen concentrations inside the cabinets, as the oxygen absorbs the heat more efficiently and then is exhausted.

I have my NP1 within a semi-enclosed entertainment center. It does not run hot at all. Hard to imagine what it would take to get a 55w a/b amp to emit that much heat.

I concur. Had the CA-1 and liked it, but later on got the Vision with the NP1 and that was phenomenal. I do wonder what the digital pre and the NP1 would be like but have never enjoyed a variable output DAC into a power amp, but maybe this one is different…?
