Ghost Elephants (2025) - a National Geographic/Werner Herzog documentary

WGH

Ghost Elephants is a mesmerizing documentary by Werner Herzog.

"For over a decade, Dr. Steve Boyes, conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer, has been in search of a mysterious, elusive herd of Ghost Elephants in the highlands of Angola, deep within its forests. From acclaimed director Werner Herzog ("Grizzly Man"), GHOST ELEPHANTS follows Boyes on an epic journey as he sets out with some of the best master trackers in the world, in pursuit of an animal long believed to be a myth".

"Henry" at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History rotunda stands at over 13 feet tall and weighing approximately 11 tons (approx. 22,000–24,000 pounds), he is considered the largest recorded elephant. A Ghost elephant could be related, DNA tests are being compared.

Henry's tusks

The Angolan elephants live at 4000 ft and are very elusive. They are larger than an average African elephant standing 14-15 feet at the shoulder and weighing 12 tons compared to 10-11 feet and 6 tons for an average African elephant. The Ghost elephant is the largest land animal alive today.
