Active Tri amp + subs 8 channel DIY systems
« on: 8 Mar 2026, 05:14 pm »
Hi All,

In the last year I have been building 3 way speakers that I tri amp with my Primare 35.8 eight channel amp and  minidsp Flex HTx or  Baach -SP Adio for crossover and bass management.
Great journey and much to learn. Next is to take a pair of Dunlavy SC II's and install a passive crossover A/B bypass switch and then use minidsp Flex HTX to implement my own active crossover- then listen to hear which one is better.

Simultaneously ( for another room) my next build will either be an Open baffle design or a 2 way ( with 4 subs) horn with SEOS -Super Elliptical Oblate Spheroid waveguide horn with 12" midwoofer

Anyone have experience with these setups? I may need some help on the cabinet design for the horn 2 way.

Glad to join

Will the passive crossover be stock Dunlavy SCII crossover, Dunlavy with better parts, or a new design?
I'd be interested in how a good passive crossover will compare to minidsp Flex HTX, mostly the dsp's transparency.

Yes - current Dunlavy SCII has stock passive crossover. The proposition is that Active crossovers- with Bi or Tri amping each driver, can deliver better SQ. My focus is to learn and then implement this in either DIY speakers or premade ones that already have passive crossovers. Will install A/B switch to test. Premade speakers will need drivers to be internally re wired for bi/tri amping with additional binding posts as well. In some cases, I may just move ( or make ) the passive crossover in an external box for ease of testing.

I have seen tri-amp speaker mods in the past, there was a large expense.
Commercially this is not done for some reason.
