New member intro - LGK 2.1 build

Hello!

I recently finished building my first pair of speakers, the LGK 2.1s and wanted to share the results with y'all. I have been interested in hifi for a while so I am super happy to finally have some pretty great speakers for my desk. I am running them off the Ampapa Q1 dac and D1 amp and have the lows covered by an Audioengine S8 which I am hoping to replace sooner than later as it is quite boomy, especially in contrast to the LGK 2.1s.

I made the sapele veneers from a different project that had some extra thickness on the stock material and used ash strips on the corners to allow for the 3/8" roundover on the edges, very happy with how they turned out.

Hey Dath, how do you like that Ampapa combo?
Over Xmas, I picked up the Douk dac-11 (impulse buy) and I'm really enjoying it. So much so, that I'm strongly considering purchasing the Ampapa dac so I can play the op-amp game. And I'm thinking that I might as well try the Ampapa amp also, again for the op-amp game and for aesthetics since they will sit in my den with the tv and my wife will complain less if their appearance has some uniformity to them.

Hi yamaha626, I am digging both the Ampapa products so far, I got a set of SX52B op amps and currently have them in the amp, though they are quite snug with how Douk chose to lay out the new D1 board. I want to try the SX52Bs in the dac as well, but my preferred AKM chip also has layout issues for fitting the SX52Bs, this time it interferes with the housing. It seems like it'd be fairly easy to make a notch in the housing to provide adequate clearance, just need to get around to doing it. I am coming from a 10+ year old audioengine D1 paired to A5+ speakers, so this setup sounds quite a lot better with a proper sound stage and imaging of each vocal/instrument. Just need to find the right sub kit to pair with them now as the S8 really isn't fast enough to match the LGK 2.1s.

Huh, that is interesting because I also far prefer the AKM chip in the dac-11. As for myself, I went from a Pro-ject Pre Box S2 Dig to the dac-11. I liked the Pre Box, but gotta say that I'm really impressed with the vocals that the AKM chip provides. My only real complaint with the dac-11 is the user interface...maybe I'll get used to it; but so far, not thrilled with it.
Probably gonna pull the trigger in the next week or 2 on the Ampapa combo. Thanks for your reply.

Yea the user interface on these Amapapa units certainly seems to be improved from what I've seen on the dac-11, the remote is also handy and has a few shortcuts on it. I just got a 48v 10a GaN power supply for the D1 and wow, what a difference, the sound is way fuller and more dynamic, I even had to turn my sub down a bit.

Great looking job on the speakers. I like the contrasting woods choice.
