“Planning My First DIY Speaker Build”
« on: 5 Mar 2026, 06:25 pm »
Hello everyone,

My name is Harsha. I’m interested in DIY audio and I’m planning to build my first DIY speaker here in the USA. I joined AudioCircle to learn from experienced members and understand more about speaker design, drivers, and cabinet building.

I came to know about Danny’s videos a long time ago through the New Record Day YouTube channel. His videos helped me realize some important realities about design goals for speakers.

I’m currently researching different drivers and kits and would appreciate any advice for someone starting their first DIY speaker project.

Looking forward to learning from the community.

Thank you,
Harsha

Welcome to AC  :thumb:
If memory serve me well the Full Range drivers know to have great sound are:
Visaton B200 in a 100L sealed box or OB.
Lii Audio Song F15 $399 pair in the recommended BR box at botton of the page or OB
Lii Audio Song F18 $520 pair in a OB panel.

They run direct from the amp No Crossover need.

If you have a hi sensitivity speaker as 100dB and bening impedance curve there is no much things to upgrade IMO, maybe inside the enclosure if you are picky as myself. Today audiophiles can take advantage of inexpensive and transparent powerful Class D or GaN-FET amps and recently with Lii Song Audio, also take vantage of inexpensive big cones full range drivers, this will save a lot of money hence no crossover and no enclosure need.

This is a inexpensive DIY project from an AC member,
It have only four (4) parts:
Eminence Alpha15A + 4.7mH + Visaton B200 and a MDF baffle.

Other option are the Lii Audio F15 FR driver $399/pair, not each.
Here Decware OB with the Lii Audio F15 driver:

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair, pair not each) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

Visaton nB200

One of my favorite 2 8’ fr. Also SEAS FA22.

Both really benefit from phase plugs:

If installing in in FA22 a couple notches need to be carved in the base.

The B200 REALLY needs them (instead of a “bandaid” notch filter. FA22 is eaier to put in a box. B200 works OB or a really big aperiodic box. I am not a fan of OBs (at least the couple dozen i have heard).

The Markaudio drivers are in general very good.

I would not go near the Lii stuff. Largely poor copies of renowned vintage stuff.

You will find a whole lot more practical experience over here: http://diyaudio.com
