Will be hearing them soon, and I think my Pass XA60.8s will drive them VERY well.. Too bad the latter weigh 88 pounds each...but my goodbuddyfellowaudiofool is younger and stronger than I am, and I do have a handtruck.. Hmmm...

  • Without music, life would be a mistake.
I run NX-Oticas (little brother of the NX-tremes) with a Pass design in my setup downstairs (a hotrodded First Watt Aleph J Zen).  I think the XA60.8's are going to be fabulous with the NX-Tremes.

Will be seeing and hearing those Phoenix-area NX-Ts Monday.. I hope they'll sound as good as I think they will.

How's did it go?

I used Pass XA-60s on my NX-Oticas for a while and they sounded very nice. I decided I liked the sound of my DIY 300B P-SET monoblocks a bit better, but I think this would depend a bit on the type of music and personal preferences.

Well, not so well.. The owner and his wife were very gracious hosts.. He had done an excellent job of assembling the speakers, but the antirez material was not yet applied, and his new listening room in a new house, almost a cube and with NO room treatments yet, was bright and very...jumbled...sounding, making it difficult to 'hear' the speakers.. After thinking that I could have 10kilobuck$ invested in a finished pair, I decided against them and have ordered a used pair of Mag. 20.7s.. I guess I'm too old and tired to start another one of those projects.

This is a huge--for me--trade, with 13 cartons of SoundLabs, power amps including my XA60.8s, and virtually ALL-other surplus gear being hauled north to Denver.. Coming home will be the used 20.7s and a pair of used PS Audio BHK600s.. All this will happen at TheMusicRoom in Colorado; I'll be renting a 15-passenger van with all the seats removed but the two fronts, and my daughter and I will drive up and back.. This time we'll be taking three days instead of two.

I've had '600s before; they were the 2nd pair of amps that sounded excellent driving the SoundLabs, the first being Pass X260.8s and the third-and-final pair being Pass XA60.8s; I'm confident the '600s will sound excellent with the 20.7s.

My SoundLab 'era' will soon be over, and my 20.7 era begins.. We'll see how it goes, but I'm already confident it will go very well.

Bummer deal. I guess it does go to show you can't ignore the elephant that is the room. I'm sure he'll get it sorted, but it is a bigger part of good sound than most people give it credit for.

It's too bad you weren't able to hear a pair that were well set up, but the 20.7s are a nice choice and the PSA amps should drive them really well.

Room dimensions, treatments, and speaker positioning can make or break a system.

If you ever find yourself wanting for more bass (although the 20.7s are no slouches), you might consider a pair of GR Triple Threats (or even quad-driver versions). These should integrate quite well with the Maggies.

I have had a LOT of Magnepan models in here, and honestly have not been that impressed. However, after the upgrade I designed for the 20.7 model, it was pretty impressive. It was not in the same league as the NX-Treme, but some qualities were really good and I can really enjoy listening to them.
