RIP - when I lived on Virginia, I used to see him on a regular basis as Sweetwater Tavern (one of my favorities - https://www.greatamericanrestaurants.com/restaurants) in Centreville, VA.  He had a big estate in The Plains, VA.  One time in the men's room I said to him "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning," which was one of him famous movie lines (I believe Apocalypse Now from 1979).  He laughed.

From Boo Radley in "To Kill a Mockingbird" to a crusty western hero in sooooo many roles, he was a master of finding a way to connect audience to character.
I'll probably watch "Open Range' tonight

Loved a quote from the NYT this morning: “Clyde Haberman, who wrote Duvall’s obituary, noted the actor’s ear for speech patterns, his eye for mannerisms, his ability to become his characters. “I hang around a guy’s memories,” Duvall once said.”

Artistry in general, particularly actors, leave me dumbfounded. I’ve tried and failed miserably.

Tender Mercies, The Great Santini, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now ...
A real actor. An artist. One of the all time greats. He will be missed.
