Greetings from Erie PA! I just read the definition of an audiophile... I guess that's me. Just joined to gain some knowledge while putting together a nice system. I've purchased a pair of Gallo 3.5 speakers. I would like to use my pair of Vandersteen 2WQ subwoofers to help ease the load so I can purchase a lower powered tube amp to drive them. Then maybe a new preamp, currently have an Assemblage L1, a Sonic Frontiers SFL1 knockoff. If this post is approved I guess I finally figured out the answer to: What is the last word on the second last line of this page in lower case (8 letters)?: Was wondering just how dumb I really am!

I have always liked the look of Anthony Gallo speakers, I don’t think I have ever heard one in person, or if I have it was a very longtime ago so can’t really remember what they sounded like.

I was hoping that using the Vandersteen high pass filter would reduce the load on the amplifier making it easier to drive.

How would using the Vandersteen high pass filter help the situation?  Are you planning on using another more powerful amp to drive the Gallo's bass section?  If so you may still be able to use a tube amp of similar gain but low powered wouldn't be the right choice.  You could start with a 35-40wpc EL-34 amp if you listen at low volumes but will likely find out you need more.  Whatever you decide to do with a tube amp I would either buy used so you can flip it if not powerful enough or if new one with a return policy. FYI I used Vandersteen 2WQ's for almost 20 years with Vandersteen and other similar efficiency speakers and at no time did it allow me to go to a low powered amp.

Well... I guess I was hoping that some relief of the lower registers would require less power. I guess in a way it may let me use a 40W amp like you said, The Gallo's are not Bi-ampable for the tweeter, mid & woofer, but they do have a second voice coil in the main woofer that can have its own amp which I do have. I can give it a try. Plenty of used amps out there.

Interesting question.  If I understand correctly, big if, the only way to offload an impedance dip/high current demand using your subs is a high pass filter at the preamp/processor.

I guess that's a good way to put it, offload some current demand. The big if, can I purchase an Inspire amp from Dennis had, at most 16WPC, and drive these speakers? The answer is probably no. Like JackD said, I should probably start with an EL34 type amp pushing 40WPC.

Welcome to AC! If I were to put a system together, I sure would get a device to clean up the noise on the electrical lines. Doing that will better allow you to gauge the performance of your gear. An UberBUSS from GR Research or a Puritan would very likely be a good addition to your system

Just my humble $.02 but...I think you're over-analyzing. Go get that Assemblage L1 and pick up a basic 2 channel Solid State amp that has the guts to drive those Gallo's. This will get you in the ball game, and I bet you'll be surprised at how well such a "Hybrid" system works. Then you can start adding the additional tweaks...cables, power conditioning, room conditioning, etc.
