Kismet Reference amp in Khartago case!
« on: 5 Feb 2026, 01:20 am »
I recently purchased a customized Kismet stereo amp from Klaus Bunge. After a few weeks of break-in I am really impressed and happy with this amp. I own some really nice Nagra and Accuphase gear in a very high end main system. I've been obssessed with great audio gear for over 30 years. This is in a second system I recently put together. For the money I would say this is the best amp I've heard including many at the Axpona and other shows. It's also really well built. Klaus even biased it to match my home voltage exactly. Amazing overall sound. Very neutral, powerful, quiet and great imaging. Again their's better out there but you'd have to spend so much more. Kudos to Klaus for building a high end amp at mid-fi pricing!

I am curious to know exactly how your new amp stacks up to your others in your main system?  For me, that is the real test.  I often read of components being good for the money.  That is fine, but that also immediately tells me that it is compromised in some important way.  One really doesn't know how good something is until it is in your own system for evaluation.  Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to play at home with any +20K amplifiers and very few +15K ones.  I will say my custom Odyssey monos when biased correctly hold their ground easily against what I have known.

Good point.  When we got the TAS product of the year awards for the Khartago and the Stratos monos,  I actually heard them in Jonathan Valin's systems myself...In both cases he had Soulution amps,   1 x $ 145 K monos and 1 x $  65K stereo.....and both times it was frighteningly close to a point where at a blind test (albeit you'd always pick out the Soulutions because of their sheer power advantages over the Odyssey)  you might get really confused...........IT WAS AWESOME  !!!!!

Also,  over the years that I have had my Hyper power supply Kismets,  I have had quite a few amps in my home...mostly from friends and also from customers who wanted to hear the difference....Soulutions, $$$ Moon's, 80 K Halcros,  ARC References...........and other than the ARC's,  the Kismets were easily the choice of everybody hearing them..........

I know where I stand with performance vs. price.....the problem is that most people don't get to completely understand as to what they have....case in point:  the amount of returning customers who sold their Odyssey's and tried something else is staggering.    But the biggest problem is that people might get jaded...  Seen and heard about Odyssey for a long time.so, it's not the new and shiny object anymore......

This is REALLY good info, Klaus - Housteau opened a very useful & interesting topic, and both it & your reply are spot on for "required reading" for "normal people" looking to buy gear.

Most people have rely on reviews, occasionally audio shows, and dealers (if they can find one that carries the brands they want to audition, which was never easy "in the good old days", but is now pretty much impossible in most areas).  Some are fortunate enough to have a friend who has the means to just collect really high end gear, but the bottom line is that for the vast majority, it comes down to paying attention to someone else's opinions.  Comparisons of gear when listened to in otherwise different systems and/or rooms is also almost always meaningless.  Sometimes an opinion can be derived from how many different people love a unit in their system & room, and frankly I think that's where most of us land in these days of hundreds or thousands of internet postings - we end up giving equal credence to someone we frankly don't even know for sure has ever even heard the product he's talking about, much less whether he knows good sound when he hears it.  We just have to hope we get really good sample info and average it.  Even then, without taking the time to really learn how well the preferences of the reviewers at the trade rags align with our own, etc. we're just rolling the dice, while trying to "weight" them with some hopefully accurate info.  I have been following JV for a long time, and feel I can trust his opinions pretty well.  By using the word "trust" I'm not commenting simply on honesty - I would hope, but doubt, that's always a given for all the reviewers - I'm talking about trusting that if he likes it, I would too.  It constantly amazes me how many people are quick to disparage all trade professionals on the basis that they're "paid shills", then completely trust someone they know nothing about and has no "skin in the game" whatsoever - they can change their username and be a completely different person tomorrow, or even be 5 different people at the same time today.

Anyway, with all that said, and despite all that, I bought a used Khartago Stereo SE+(?), based heavily on JV's review, at least initially.  It came out in 2009, the unit I bought was made in 2020, and I had read extensive praise your work in the intervening years.  (I was saving up to buy a new one while looking for used ones & found this one - maybe an upgrade to monoblocks is in my future one day, if it can still be matched by then)  My roll of the dice came up perfect, because the Khartago is exactly what I was looking for in a power amp.  Thank you Klaus!
