I saw this review that came out this week on a new speaker. I think they are a cool idea, but there were some improvements that could be had according to the measurements made in the video.

https://youtu.be/cZrHDm3NRSo?si=yuUBRuRH8S98KpGe

1 - Better bracing
2 - Acoustic tuning (possibly updating the acoustic damping with No Rez)
3 - Refined crossovers fixing the design, and better parts etc…

Seems to me since New Record Day and GR have a relationship, and are close by it would be a great project to have GR test these and get an upgrade package together.

These are already a pretty popular design, and very solid candidate due to reasonable pricing with potential.

Anyway I am sure there is some interest in this, and if these are still sitting in Texas definitely a good opportunity.

Thanks

I'm sure this will be taken in consideration, since it's been reviewed by Ron D. In the event it's not considered for an upgrade, one can still take their own initiative, like I did, achieving excellent results with my own speaker upgrade project. The caveat, if the design is bad, simply replacing stock value parts, may not be the solution for optimal results. In my case, my speakers were simply being held back, by budget parts. As far as beefing up bracing and adding NoRez? An inert cabinet is an audiophile's best friend.

Danny offers upgrade services to customers, all the time, even if he hasn't reviewed or displayed it on his site. One only has to inquire to benefit from his services. Danny and his staff provide excellent customer services.

Was going to say almost exactly the same as above.

I understand, but that was not really the point of the thread. I figured this would be actually a very realistic kit / fix for someone like GR to offer as a standard in their upgrade kits since its low hanging fruit, and as explaned in above the situation looks ripe for picking.

I honestly think looking at this speaker over a classic JBL studio monitor that he just made a video about which he might sell a kit to 3 people for a pair of 1988 JBLs just because someone randomly sent him one, and I could see this having a much broader interest.

And being these are a current available product that makes a lot of sense to do this with right now especially with the price point, and potential of this design its a win win for his product line, and future customers.

Thats all... No biggie

Thanks

The Nostala is $2,999. For roughly $2,400, you can get the GR Research Brute kit and flat pack. With minimal skills, you can assemble a similar speaker to the Nostala, and it will likely outperform it in every category. If I purchased the Nostala, I'd need to ship a speaker to Danny to measure it and pay for upgrades, or purchase an upgrade kit. No need to do that with the Brute.

I am all in favor of upgrades to pretty much any/all speakers.  They are ALL compromised when it comes to bracing (usually) and crossover parts quality (always).

But, for the cost of the Nostalgia's plus upgrade kit, you could just build out some Brute's or some Bully's which are going to stomp all over the Nostalgia speakers.

Although, I will say the Nostalgia's do look cool.  So might be worth buying and upgrading just from that perspective.

Not to nitpick here but people implying that something they have not listened to yet, can be bested by something else. You simply do not know as you have not compared them side by side.
I am sure I am going to get flamed here for my comment, this is why I always say to people go and listen for yourself rather than relying on what people say on forums. Most people on forums are just saying what they think and most of the time it’s not based on personal experience / fact.

I get it guys, most will not do all that.

And lets be honest the Nostalas are just a Chinese clone of the ATCs which actually has appeal, and the dome midrange.

Hence they will be out there.

I have no problem with upgrades, and speakers that GR wants to measure, all I am saying is nobody has to ship these if they are accessible right now and it makes sense.

Guess everyone misses the whole point.

But my assumption is the only reason not to do this is because the reviewers allowing this to take place will get flack from the manufacture for allowing someone to really expose the weakness to their current product lines.

Actually, we can predict the sound quality of these speakers from decades of personal experience, compared with what Danny offers. Here's what is 99% assured:

1. Emotiva built these speakers to a price point
2. This isn't Emotiva's first foray into building speakers, so we have some history to draw from
3. The crossover parts quality isn't likely to be very high (see pic below from Emotiva's website)
4. The crossover design can likely be improved
5. The insulation (if any) can be improved (No Rez!)
6. The binding posts can be improved (tube connectors!)

No one, not even Emotiva, would consider these speakers to be "high end." Because the Brute is DIY, it won't be considered high-end either, but its design and build quality are on par with those of high-end speakers. Once you consider all of these factors, the outcome is highly predictable.

Anything can be improved as everything is built to a price. Throwing more money at it may or may not improve it. You have not heard this model, so saying you can predict it’s behaviour is not fact, you are just guessing.

I agree with you.  Ron is very close to GR and a trip over with a Nostalgia would have been super easy.  But you're also right that Emotiva probably would not appreciate a reviewer taking their review sample to someone like Danny.

Don't listen to me. Send Ron an email and ask him to compare the Nostala to the Brute. Privately, he may confirm what we already know.

Thanks Early B. but I don’t listen to anyone, I like to use my own ears as I am the one parting with the money and it’s me that will have to live with it.

Here is someone else’s review of the same speaker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m672H-wLz-g
