Whole house generator
« on: 23 Jan 2026, 08:56 pm »
With the bad weather across the U.S. and wishing I had a Generac Generator I got to thinking if it improves the sound of  your system since it is off the grid.  I am sure someone has tried it.  Let me know if you have and how it sounded.

Seriously doubt it. Keep in mind that the whole-house generator still relies on the same infrastructure, i.e., the wiring inside your walls, etc. That's different from powering your audio system only via a battery-powered generator. I have two EcoFlow units, and I've never hooked up my audio system to hear if it sounds better. If so, every hard-core audiophile would own one. Also, you'll need a pure sine wave generator (many say they are, but aren't), and you'll need to try various types and brands of batteries.

I had a Generac in my last house but either I don't understand your inquiry, or you don't understand what a backup generator does.
A Generac is just a backup generator (really no different than any other backup generator except Generac spends a lot more money on marketing). It only runs when the power goes out (with the exception of a weekly self-test), the rest of the time you still pull power off the grid.
And no, I never noticed any improvement in audio or video quality when the generator was running but that was probably because there was a bad storm running amok outside whenever we lost power.

They are also so loud, the entire neighborhood will hear it like it’s right next to them.

I would definitely go with an EcoFlow setup for emergency power. I don't have a whole-house system, but the EcoFlow UPSs that I have inside the house work very well. I can check the battery status on the app and the batteries last for more than 10 years (much better than lead batteries). They are much lighter and have higher energy density as well.

However, concerning a Generac or similar, as others have said, the noise generated from devices within the house is a substantial part of the issue, and running the whole house on a generator costs fuel and is noisy.

I've heard very good improvement using a Puritan power filter combined with their box allowing the Puritan to safely use a dedicated grounding rod (installed outside just behind the wall where the stereo lives).
