I bought a new outlaw audio 7000x, and am getting some hum from the speakers. I'm hooking the amp directly to the wall, and was wondering if i'd lose anything by connecting it to the zero surge? I just want the hum to go away ...

Depends on what kind of hum it is.  Is in coming from inside the amp (mechanical / transformer hum)?  Or is the hum coming only through the speakers?

Most amplifiers have sufficient filtering internally to overcome potential drivers of hum that might enter through your home's electrical system.  While its possible that a power condition might help, it would be the potential cause that I'd investigate last.

Since the amp in question is multi-channel, it seems likely that your system is a home theater, or AV system?  If so, is the system connected in any way to cable (maybe via a cable modem and/or cable box)? If so, I'd start there.  Does the hum still present if you completely disconnect / isolate your system from the cable box?

I agree with whell, first try and find out where the problem is coming from, and I will say if you can’t be bothered then try connecting it to your zero surge and listen with your ears to hear the result. If you like what you hear, use it and if you don’t then you will really need to find out where the problem is coming from, no one can really tell you if you will lose anything for doing so. You have the kit there, try it for yourself and let your ears be the judge. You don't need anyone else's validation.

The hum is coming from the speakers. Strangely, the amp itself is silent. I'm using RCA all around, and the 7000x has a rca-xlr switch. If i flip the switch to xlr, the hum goes away. So i have a couple of things to try ... different RCA cable and/or connect to zero surge. My main concern was if i was limiting the amp in any manner by going through zero surge. I've read that using using surge protectors can limit current but wanted to verify with others here.

According to the 7000x manual you are not supposed to get an audio if you have the 7000x set to XLR and you are using RCA cables for input. From the manual:


Ensure your Input Selector Switch is set correctly.
For example, if using RCAs, set the switches to RCA;
if using XLRs, set the switches to XLR.
If set improperly, you will have NO audio!

I'd ask Outlaw to opine on what is happening. What are you using for a preamplifier?

I recently bought a brick wall which uses the same tech and it robbed my amp of bass.
Non Sacrificial surge suppressors can be current or voltage limiting which can cause this issue. It is the inductor apparently.  MOV surge suppressors dont have this problem.  So I use a tripp light ultra for my amp and everything else goes to the brick wall.

Start simple:

1) Disconnect all the input (&control) cables.Do all the speakers hum?

2) At your control unit. Disconnect all the input, output (& control) cables.
Then attach one output cable to the amp input. Does that channel hum?

3) Then attach the other amp input cables. Does it hum?

4) Then in the same way, move on to your source units.

The amp is connected to a receiver (NAD T758v3)via pre-outs. I had am arcam PA720 earlier and that caused no speaker hums.
Connecting it to the zero surge made no difference.
Changing the interconnects made no difference.
Tried powering off the NAD receiver, and the hum continues.
I plugged it into a different outlet, and the buzzing increased even more.
Disconnecting the input from the amp, removed the noise.

Connected my headphone dac/amp via xlr connections, and the amp is dead silent. No hum/buzz from anywhere.

So my reading is that the amp itself is quiet until something is connected to it via single-ended RCA connections. 

I don't know if it even makes sense to try a different power conditioner like a DC blocker (Emotiva CMX-2+) or just contact outlaw.
