BDA3.14 SACD Format
« on: 18 Jan 2026, 12:43 pm »
I’ve been thinking about buying a BDA3.14.  A big plus for me is the ability to use my OPPO205  as a SACD transport via HDMI in.  However, the table on page 5 of the BDA3.14 manual indicates that HDMI inputs only play at PCM, maxed out at 24/192.  Can anyone confirm whether the BDA3.14 can 1. play DSD input via HDMI as DSD or 2. just converts DSD to PCM, or 3. can’t accept DSD at all?  I would have thought it must be 1. otherwise a rather pointless feature, but the manual suggests otherwise.  Thanks.

You're correct in reporting what the table indicates.

In the next column, the written description says the following:
"HDMI Audio
The BDA-3.14 can receive both PCM and DSD audio
over the HDMI . . . ."

Since the table and the text contradict each other, only one can be true. Or . . . the file player can play DSD files via the HDMI input, but not natively.

It's possible that to play DSD files over HDMI, the 3.14 has to send it in a PCM wrapper.

My BDP3 also plays DSD (.dxf) files via both USB and HDMI, however I've never seen the file format indicator LEDs turn amber, even with files that I know for certain are DSD 1 or 2.

Oddly, the table in the manual for the BDA3 does show DSD capability over HDMI.  Which might suggest that HDMI is routed through the streamer in the 3.14.

I’m happy with it playing DoP or “Native” DSD  as per whatever my Oppo sends over HDMI (as DoP is not converting to PCM) , but if the 3.14 just converts what’s input to PCM that seems pointless to me.

I can confirm the BDA-3.14 can be used to decode SACDs with DSD via HDMI from a relevant transport. That's what I do with my Cambridge CXU Oppo clone.

Buy with confidence, if that's what you want.

Thanks, great to get real practical user feedback. So I presume (FWIW) that will mean the rate indicator on the 3.14 indicates DSD when playing SACD into HDMI?

Maybe take your oppo 205 to your bryston dealer and test DSD playback on a bd3.14 before you place your order??

Absolutely. If they don't, you need to adjust the SACD output settings in your Oppo UDP-205.
