Thanks everyone for your comments. I spoke with the folks at Van Alstine and since I am between surge protectors at the moment and with the possible DC issue I have a Humdinger on the way. They said the Humdinger is also a surge protector.

Here is a shot of RB version of T10 but its similar to my version with its added features.  Upper right "donut" is the transformer on which I loosened nut and rotated the part.  I half remember that the noise came off the transformer itself but fix worked and it was easy.
