New to the GR Research and the Circle
« on: 22 Dec 2025, 08:24 pm »
Allow me to introduce myself. New to the circle, long time lurker of GR Research and always tempted to get the opportunity to get a product from Danny. I am now considering building my fist kit, the NX-3 Bravo. Not sure if I should go with the kit or order the completed speakers. Mainly concerned with my ability to do a decent job finishing the cabinets. I am pretty handy on the mechanical and electronics side of the build and smart enough to know that finishing a cabinet and making it look good is not a job that should be underestimated. Would appreciate any feedback please. Also, for those that have any experience with the new NX-3 would love to hear your experience.

Do the kit and you can likely finish it yourself no problem.  But if you cannot for some reason, you can have a local woodworker do it for you as a backup plan.

Definitely a flatpack and full kit makes your life easy with a first time build. Highly recommended way to dip your toes in. Plus there are lots of people able AND willing to chime in with helpful tips along the way. I couldn't have finished my NX-Studios without a few of them to guide in avoiding pitfalls.

Finishing a cabinet is actually kinda easy if using automotive paint. It is daunting to learn on the fly, kinda spendy for materials and definitely has safety hazards to work through; but if you're willing to follow the manufacturer's instructions and pay attention to the details you can easily work your way through it. Plus the longevity of the finish is very very nice.

I would defer to others on veneer, but I can help you through the paint side pretty easily. :thumb: I just finished painting a set of Triple Threat for a friend, and currently in the garage painting an amplifier chassis waiting for paint to dry.

I don't own the Bravo product. I do own around a dozen GR speakers that I use them every day and they are all painted in Duratex. My listening room has 4 open baffels in white duratex and my TV room I have 7 sealed in black duratex. I like the duratex because it was a simple application and chip repair will be easy to fix. I have experienced the glue assembly of the GR kit and if I need to glue anything in the future I will use my woodworker, I did not enjoy the glue learning curve.

I will caution that the NX3-Bravo flatpack can be a challenging glue up with the numerous internal braces if you’ve never done it before. I would pay a little more and have Killian glue them up for you at least. He will also round over the edges for you. Then all you have to worry about is the finishing.
