They help with component matching and system integration, specifically, high frequency extension and the midrange character.
The top switch has two positions for the high frequencies:
The “down” position selects a natural balance for the high frequencies (a gradual, -2 dB roll-off from 12
kHz to 20 kHz), and the “up” position removes much of this -2 dB roll-off for a near flat response to 20kHz.
The bottom switch targets the character of the midrange through three positions:
Down = default (neutral/natural),
Middle = presence (the midrange moves perceptibly forward several inches)
Up = warm
