Pricing a modified stratocaster
« on: 19 Dec 2025, 05:06 pm »
I am considering selling my strat, ill have to look at my bank acct after holidays...

Here's the issue, I know nothing about guitars so I don't know what it is worth.  I can't just look at comps since it has all these mods.  I do have details and pix.

Can you assist?  Either give me advice or point me to a forum.  I checked out reverb.com, but there's no forum or place to chat.

Here's what tge previous owner said

Selling a recently rebuilt Fender Stratocaster MIM "black label" only available 96-97. Not to be confused with the Squier Series. Refinished in black nitro lacquer. Various dings and imperfections were left for that "roadworn" look. The Poplar body was fully copper shielded and grounded. The chrome hardware was all cleaned and screws function as new. The rosewood neck has minor nicks and imperfections, but minimal fret wear. Very nice chocolatey board with clay vintage dots (actually resembles my '94 Custom Shop). The dual magnet style 90's mexi pickups have plenty of spank. New pots, caps, 5way switch. Basic aged 8 hole, single ply pickguard. Currently setup with Ernie Ball Pink 09-42's.

So its not a vintage or famous year, if you are located in USA/Mexico I could say 50% off retail IMO, if you are located in Europe or overseas it will worth more.

Its difficult to evaluate modified guitars.
The lowest prices are the 3 wood pieces body.
Bodies in just one piece are very rare.
If you google used stratocaster 1996 price, will appear some sale prices.

you may be hard pressed to make a sale in this economy and unfortunately I wouldn't deem it a collectable - like eveything else it depends on how flexible you are on price and how quick you want to sell - bottom line it's only worth what someone will pay (bought my first Hagstrom electric bass almost 60 years ago and I've seen rollercoaster values in the market and no one has a crystal ball)

a quick look on kijiji puts a mexican strat in Canada around $500 to $600 cdn - you could advertise at the price you want and gauge interest or check if a store will take it on consignment - less for you to go that route but it would give you an idea on price
Could also check The Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide, buy a copy or look it up at a book store or local library

qood luck if you decide to sell
