FET Valve SL origins
« on: 9 Dec 2025, 12:59 am »
Hello!  :D I am new here and have just acquired a AVA FET Valve SL preamplifier. Waiting for it to be delivered. Will use it with my Soundstream DA-1('92 Krell Design) which powers my ADS 1530s, using various sources. I am having trouble finding info on the preamp. Aado Perandi designed it for AVA (says so on back of pre). Any idea when it was made? If AVA will service/upgrade it? Over all impressions of it as well as the phono section? Thanks in advance for any info. I look forward to being a part of this community. I appreciate all of the security in this forum, I am sure I will get used to it. Cheers

I own a few pieces of AVA gear and was an acquaintance of Franks.  They will service the preamp as long as parts are available.  But give them a call, they answer their phone and have great customer service. Or at the very least, shoot them an email.

Hi, this is Jim from Audio by Van Alstine. Yes, we definitely are still able to service the FET Valve SL.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I am so glad to know Frank's work lives on. I would really like to know more about the FET Tube SL. All I know is that it has 4 12ax7 tubes with 2 of them for the phono section. Back in the early 80's I had a Super PAS that I loved. I took it to many a friends house and shamed their far more expensive preamps. Great fun! When I saw this FET Tube unit recently, I had to have it. I hope I've picked a good one. Anyone know when these were produced or anything about the design of this unit?

Are you familiar with the Wayback Machine internet archive tool? You can search archived versions of the AVA website. Looks like the F V SL was in the catalog up through 2002.

Believe you are talking about the Fet valve hybrid preamp that was made in the 90s - early 00s. I have the EC version of the preamp and think I still have the manual somewhere at home.
Can post screenshots if I find it!
