Maggie owner, new to the forum

Hey everyone, joined the forum mainly to learn more about another pair of speakers I happened into (vmps), but have a couple different pairs of speakers I mainly listen to at home. One of those is a pair of MG-IIas that are about as old as me. I picked them up when a customer of mine (when I worked at an audio dealer) traded in. I got them for under $200, and promptly tore them apart to check for any damage to the actual drivers, replace the crossover components, and put new fabric over them. Magnepan was super helpful in getting schematics, some repair materials, and new socks, so I was able to easily repair/upgrade them. They sound awesome, rivaled the MG1.6 that we had in our store at the time, and I’ve loved planars ever since!
Anyone else do similar upgrades to older Maggies? I also got to do a similar repair upgrade to a set of tympani IVas, and omg those were awesome!

Sadly, this circle seems to have puttered out. Very little replies anymore.

That is commendable you resurrected old MGs. Do you have pix of the project and or finished results? What pre/amp do you use?

In my case, I modded 1.7i s. Made strudy diy stands, eliminated the terminal panel, built external boxes for big honking poly caps and foil inductors. I posted pix somewhere on this circle.
Ive been happy with their sound too. They really sing with quality recordings.

I posted my recent experiment adding PA plate amp EV speakers in parallel. Kind of add a muffleness. Not good for quality recordings, jazz, female vocals, soft rock , but really add that punch for rock. Listened to PFs The Wall full lp 1st time in 20 years.
The punch of the EVs made me jump in my seat  :icon_surprised:

Once you start on the Tympanis, I'm sure Josh will chime in.
He has quite a bit of experience with them.
