The above shows how unreasonable expectations from some owners help kill the BDP3. I don't know if this link can be accessed. But what it says is Auralic has thrown in the towel and it is no longer making streamer of digital audio players. The reasons speak for themselves. I am glad Bryston is surviving at the moment. Bryston is so customer friendly, it is assaulted by its customers. No good deed goes unpunished. We ain't right.:x If it would be left to some, Bryston would be bankrupt which is what happened to Auralic and those BDP3 owners who defected to this brand got their comeuppance.

To this day, I still wonder if you're a Bryston employee, an A tier troll, or actually....

No, Bryston stopped providing significant updates to BDPs' own MPD back in 2014 +/-. Notable updates after that were BDP could work as Roon endpoint (2015 ish), and USB wifi adapter dongle functionality.

I bought my BDP-1 to run WAV/FLAC from local USB hard drives. I didn't need Tidal, fancy database, etc etc. Just straight folder view, play, pause, forward, rewind. That's it. Nothing else. Back in 2014 or so when I got it, it was actually fabulous at it. By 2018ish, the MPD updates had essentially made even that basic functionality useless. It'd get stuck so frequently with the same library size as before. Hell, I even remade the whole thing new a couple of times from scratch with only a dozen albums or so....still sucked.

For the past few years, it can only work as a Roon endpoint. The moment I switch over to MPD, all hell breaks loose.

Bryston has offered absolutely NOTHING in this decade as far as digital goes. No feature updates whatsoever. We used to get constant updates back in early 2010s about Manic Moose from Mr. Tanner or Chris (developer). I pretty much don't see them or get updates from them at all now on this platform.

I was so invested with Bryston products early on, but now would not trust them for anything digital. I was a bit sad that I got a good deal on Torus conditioner, only because it didn't have the Bryston faceplate to match it. Now, I consider that a blessing in disguise.

OS 3 ain't happening people....discontinuing the BDP-3 made it super obvious. If there are any updates from Bryston employees reading this, please let us know.

I sold my BR-20 for the same reason... first of all because the streamer was obsolete and second, frankly speaking, I was very pissed off because Bryston did not keep what they promised about OS3.

No, I am not a Bryston employee or a troll. Like you, I am heavily invested in Bryston owning a BDP-2, a BDP-3, a BDA-3 and a BDA-3.14. I also own a Bryston SP-3 and a Bryston 2.5b SST2 amp.  It was the heavy criticism of Manic Moose, that killed sales. I did not have the problems with Manic Moose folks were complaining about. Folks use to use Auralic as an example of a good interface. In the end, they went bankrupt. :o Bryston offered its players at a reasonable price. Not so with Auralic and for me it was too expensive.

Bryston is excellent on the analog side of things.

On the digital side with streaming, they just need to exit that arena.  There is no way they will be releasing any new streaming products or updates to any of their software.

Bryston just needs to stick with what they do best and let the real players in the streaming world shine with their products.

Uh, NO, it does not!!  There is nothing unreasonable for Bryston streamer customers to expect the company to uphold its commitments to release a new user interface, As usual this is another completely non sequitur post from a well known wanna-be fan boy.   If one reads the article, Auralic is quitting because the US is a major market and the Trump tariffs make it impossible for the company to survive if its sales are severely reduced.  My BPD-3  replaced an Auralic streamer. (Still being used in a 2nd system.) The Auralic was a good streamer. The BPD-3 is much better.  The Auralic user interface was/is much better than MM, although it is IOS based.

If you're still having an enjoyable experience with your BDP-2 and BDP-3, I must say that's awesome! I wish I could still say the same about the BDP-1. Spent a chunk on it back in the day.

My only suggestion would be to NOT touch the firmware update. I wish I could back to the older Manic Moose releases that actually worked with that unit. Should not have updated it at all after 2016 or so.

All streaming companies now finally offer lossless. Most casual and even full on audiophiles nowadays are with streaming services for their primary bulk of the library. They supplement it with their local library that may be missing on streaming platform, and integrate it within Roon to get best of both worlds.

The overall experience on all streaming services and Roon is just night and day vs. what Manic Moose offers. No one that's had a long taste of that would go back to Manic Moose.

Roon endpoints and/or multiple streaming services endpoints is the way to go nowadays. Take care of the the hardware and sound quality, leave the music management to others.

This is a good post. I have been thinking about your comments and feel I owe you an explanation. The reason I support Bryston is that when I purchased my SP-3 in December 2012, I could not operate it because it had to be connected and configured on the internet and I was not computer literate nor did I understand the internet jargon. I was mad, and felt like I purchased a 10k brick. However, 10:00 pm EST on Christmas Eve, I got a call from a gentlemen named Stan from Bryson,  and he worked with me over the phone for an extended period of time until he got me up and running. I have never experienced that kind of service from a manufactuer, so from that moment, I became a Bryton fan due to its customer support and overall integrity of the company. I have spoken with Bryston leaders, James Tanner, Chris Dayton and even Brian Russell. My SP3 is my first entry into high end audio. It was a financial strain, but I feel Bryston is a more readsonbly priced high end company that was accessible to me. From SP3, I have even purchase a Bryston analog pre-amp and have a turntable. I am extremely sorry about your BDP-1 which I think results from the unit not having enough "horsepower" and it probably should not have been approved for the upgrade after 2016. However, I believe that if you make contact, Bryston may have a way to restoring your unit to make it operable. I think the reason OS3 was not delivered it that it was not economically feasible to continue to develop the software for the expectations for some users and a corporate decision was made to stop developing it. This is pure conjecture on my part. Anyway, again, good post.  8)

Regarding OS3, just throwing this out there, Sim Audio, another small Canadian company apparently makes fantastic digital products, cosmetically, internally and overall build quality. The stuff seems top shelf in every way. Their products are not cheap though. If one small company in Canada can pull this off I don't see why Bryston can't either if they wanted. I just don't think the desire is there. Surely they should be able to afford the staffing to do so.

I had a BDP-1 and I wondered why I never really listened to music from it.
I swapped it for another player and realised why.
It wasn't the best sounding device.
The UI wasn't the best either.

I don't think Bryston wants to pursue digital players as this time because they would fundamentally have to start from the ground up which may not be cost effective. The company was sold I believe and the headquarters moved. These seem to be cost saving measures.  I, for one, could not afford a Sim Audio digital player as it seems to cost two to there times that of the Bryston player. Its beautiful looking equipment, the the BDPs match my existing equipment whereas the Sim would be like buying Classe, matching nothing in my rack.  :D

Remember the BDP-1 was a first generation product that improved sonically with succeeding models, the 2 and 3. However, it's probably the D/A converter that had the biggest effect on the sound. You are right about the UI. This never bothered me as I like the load and play convenience having owned plenty of reel to reels and cassette. I even owned a JVC VHS that was designed for music recording and playback at 44/16 PCM.

The BDP-1 and my new pkayer through the same dac sounded so different. The former sounded like you doid want to lusten to music, it was so unengaging. Newer Bryston product wasn’t much better, sorry.

What was your new player and DAC? Also, what is "doid", a typo?
