Dr Tom’s NX-Tremes
« on: 21 Sep 2025, 06:16 am »
I am very pleased to announce the latest NX-Treme system went online in Dr Tom’s custom-built listening room September 20, 2025.

Tom built the GR Research Triple Threat subwoofers and commissioned Micheal Lundy to build the GR Research NX-Treme towers. Tom was very patient while Michael dealt with the medical challenges life threw at him. Now that Michael is better and working thru the backlog of commissions at Uilleam Audio it was Tom’s turn. I was pleased to help with the delivery, final assembly, and initial setup.

Now more photos. Tom’s custom-built listening room features 16 foot (4.9 meter) ceilings, and custom panel absorbers on the side walls and colorful absorber/diffusers on the front wall. The walls are bleached and stained cabinet veneer plywood mounted with compliant hangers over insulated studs built isolated room-in-a-room style.

The core electronics of Tom’s system is 100% PS Audio, highlights including BHK Signature 250 Amplifier, just released PMG Signature Preamplifier, PerfectWave SACD Transport + DirectStream DAC MK2, Stellar Phono Preamplifier, and PowerPlant 15 AC power regenerator. A Rega turntable spins the LPs.

For a system this complex with the flexibility/challenges that come with open baffle for both the mains and subs at the end of the day the NX-Tremes+Triple Threat was sounding very very good indeed. I brought my Saturday Night In San Francisco Live LP as a test featuring music I am familiar with. On the cut Meeting of the Spirits the imaging and tonal differentiation of guitarists Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucia set a new high-water mark for the best I have heard this piece reproduced.  Tom spun one of his favorite organ recordings and the result was suitable impressive.  As break in progresses and further positioning experiments are conducted, I am confident improvements will rack up. Systems at this level I liken to race cars. Today we succeeded getting all systems online and turned a few hot laps. Now the serious tuning can begin.

Logistics were such the most efficient way to complete the NX-Treme towers was in Tom’s space. He graciously hosted us over two Saturdays, one for each tower. Michael had each tower completed and professionally painted, we installed the drivers, crossovers, and wiring at Tom’s. Thanks to Michael’s workmanship and careful planning it ‘only’ took about four hours per speaker to install and solder all the internal wiring then mount the eleven(!) drivers per tower. That’s twenty-two soldered connections and sixty-four mounting screws. Lundy is such a quality nut every one of those screws is a machine screw into an insert with the insert screwed and epoxied into the MDF. All that work done before the cabinets were glued up and painted really paid off as we worked through all the drivers. Michael's experience and standards also paid off laying out the complex series parallel wiring loom and having pre-cut all the No Rez on his table and band saws.

The crossovers were brought over completed by Michael. These carry upgrades including Sonicaps, and Miflex Capacitors plus foil inductors for the mid and HF drivers. Electra Cable Tube Connectors (of course!!) with Lundy touches like plywood mounting board and mounting to base via more machine screws with damping washers to preclude any rattles.

Michael using REW to set a baseline adjustment between the NX-Treme towers and Triple Threat subwoofers.

Normally I would close by stating Tom’s NX-Treme towers and Triple Threat system in a custom listening room is without a doubt the best sounding music maker in Tom’s home. However, in this case Danny’s PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE finds stout competition in the adjacent living room. Step outside the listening room and just around the corner one finds a restored 1911 9-foot Steinway & Sons concert grand and an electric organ. Is it live or is it Memorex GR Research? Enjoy your new instruments, Tom.

Beautiful, on soo many fronts. That space looks like quite an accomplishment, I can imagine the listening sessions that hopefully will occur in there. And the X-tremes DON’T dominate the space at all! 😂

Just gorgeous.

Congrats!

I was just chatting with Mike about this setup.

It is a beautiful room, but the treatment on those bare walls is just a drop in the bucket for what is needed in their.

Early B.
