No Rez retro fit
« on: 10 Sep 2025, 03:27 pm »
Hi All,

I've decided to reline my Omega Super Alnico Monitors - HO and Rythmik 8" woofer cabs with No Rez.  Danny, thanks for help thus far in deciding to do it and in purchasing the material.

I was lucky since I found the padding layer was stapled in, not glued, which is what I feared.  I will, of course, remove the staples.

I am starting the project today and was hoping to complete, at least the monitors, all in one day so I don't have them out of commission tonight.  But, naturally, I run into questions.  I'm posting a couple of initial photos.  One with existing damping and one with that damping layer removed.  I discovered that there is a thin, but dense, layer of some kind of damping glued underneath (the black layer).  I'm thinking I will adhere the No Rez on top of that to save some difficult removal work.  Anyone see a problem with that?  It is quite thin, maybe 1/16".

I'll report progress and before and after sound impressions later.

Advanced thanks for the help!

.....Pete

Nice speakers.
If the adhesion of the No-Rez is good on that black layer I would leave it there.

Thanks.  That thin black layer is adhered well, so NR adhesion should be good to it.

Man you are going to be shocked at how much cleaner your speakers sound once you get the norez in.

I'm hoping!  They always had a bit of bloom in the upper bass.

It's zebra wood (or zebrano).  Louis Conchos, the maker, was kind enough to make the cabinets for the 8" Rythmik powered woofers and grain matched them to the main cabs.  The monitors are basically full range single driver.  The lower driver has low pass at 200hz.  The main driver has no crossover in the path.  I've had them for about eight years.

Ok, that's one down, one to go today.  I'll tackle the woofer cabinets tomorrow.  They will go much more quickly.

Very wide angle.  The speakers are not as narrow as they look.  I left the bottom, front baffle, and around the port opening alone as was done originally.

I read, in one of the threads, that Danny said the foam portion is transparent and doesn't make the cabinet smaller.  This No Rez is more than twice as thick as the original damping so I'm counting on that to be true!

Well done. Very neat and tidy. I am looking forward to your impression of the change.

Now I have finished the woofer cabinets.  These are much smaller.  Here are before and after.  The before photo has one side of the original layer removed.  There is a cut out at the bottom to make room for the plate amp:

Again, I've read that the No Rez foam layer does not affect the effective cabinet volume with regard to the sound.  I'm doing integration adjustments to settings but wonder if this is 100% true given that I started with 1 cubic foot.  The thick No Rez reduces the physical space dramatically.  So far, I'm reserving judgment regarding the improvement for the woofers.

However, with regard to the main monitors, there is no question that there is dramatic improvement.  Much more than I was expecting!  Bass is tighter, everything is clearer, imaging is sharper, dynamics/transients have greater impact.

Very happy about this result.  Now on to overall tweaking to get the woofers newly integrated.
