Monitors, is the correct name.  Have gone active (used by nearly all recording and mixing studios) for the last several (Dynaudio BM5 Mk3, JBL 708P, and Buchardt A500SE).  Active have several advantages:  low voltage sophisticated crossovers that can incorporate DAC and/or room EQ; mono-block power amps (one per driver) to improve synergy between amp and driver; improved dynamics; greater deep bass response; improved accuracy; no consumer hit or miss matching of power amps to speakers; no speaker cables needed.

Welcome, I have the Arendal 1528 Bookshelf speakers, Monitor Audio Silver RX1.  Also have in for review and they are for sale a pair of Fritz Carbon 7 speakers in Tiger ebony.  These are wonderful sounding speakers.  If I had not already bought the 1528's, I would have bought these.  Fritz sent me the pair to review.  These are 30 pound each, have a warmer tonally rich and detailed sound with deep punchy bass.  I love them, wish I could buy them.  $2800 for the pair and they would sell for $5K if sold in stores and not direct from the company.  They use very expensive drivers and have a unique cross over.
