"Drive-Away Dolls" is Ethan Coen's first film without his brother Joel. Ethan's second solo film, "Honey Don't", starring Aubrey Plaza and Margaret Qualley is now in theaters.

"Drive-Away Dolls" has all the quirky touches the Coen Brothers films are know for starting with the fact that all the female characters are lesbians. Ethan wrote the film with his wife Tricia Cooke which adds a unique perspective to the characters. The plot twists and turns, there is a little blood but not as much as in a Coen Brothers film, and a lot of dark humor.

This film is basically a road-trip buddy movie, Jamie has a bad breakup with her girlfriend and decides to join Marian on a road trip from Philadelphia to Tallahassee, Florida. The duo accidentally get the wrong drive-away car that has a valuable suitcase in the trunk and are pursued by inept thugs. Along the way Jamie wants to have fun while trying to get her reserved friend Marion to loosen up a little.

"Drive-Away Dolls" has a fantastic cast featuring:
Margaret Qualley - Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, The Substance (the younger, taller, “perfect” woman who emerges fully formed from Elisabeth’s body), Honey Don't, Happy Gilmore 2
Geraldine Viswanathan - Blockers, Janet King, Miracle Workers, Bad Education, Cat Person, Beanie Bubble, Thunderbolts
Beanie Feldstein - Orange Is the New Black, Grey's Anatomy, What We Do In The Shadows, Will and Grace, Booksmart, Lady Bird, Focker In-Law
Bill Camp - gruff character actor you've seen everywhere but don't know his name
Pedro Pascal
Matt Damon

Ethan Coen was still honing his solo directing skills with this film, don't expect perfection. Depending on your mood, "Drive-Away Dolls" can be rated as a C- to a B+. Still, the film is way better than anything that makes it into my bad movie list. Even with it's flaws it's always entertaining and good enough for me to check out what Ethan Coen does next.

Definitely not a family film. A hard R for a thumping, punching, gun violence and orgasms. Watch it with your wife or girlfriend, the women will get it, the men will squirm.
