Replacing Grill Cover Materials on Older Speakers
« on: 20 Aug 2025, 08:21 pm »
Hello-

I'm not sure this belongs on this forum, as I'm a new member and can't search yet. I've been poking around for a while, and this seems as good a place as any for my first post.

I just purchased an older pair of PSB Century 400i bookshelf speakers. They are in pretty good shape, but I'd like to change the grill cloths which are a bit old and dark to a lighter color.

Is there any advice on choosing fabric for this? The factory cover is very thin, almost translucent stretchy material.

Thanks for any guidance. I'm sure this has come up before, but I can't find it without search.

If you type in Google "speaker grill cloth" a bunch of options will come up.  Parts Express is the company I've dealt with the most on the list, Temu and Ali Express are also prominent.  I looked at Madisound, an old standby, but it looks like they've decided not to carry cloth.  Another option might be to stop by your local JoAnn Fabrics location.  I got all the cloth for my homemade acoustic panels there.

The factory supplied ones are very thin and almost see through, designed that way to be as acoustically transparent as possible.
Whatever you replace them with also needs to be acoustically transparent otherwise, the sound will change.
A poor choice can dull the high frequencies, so it’s worth choosing carefully.

Perhaps here,

Thanks, going to hook them up tomorrow and live with them for a while. If they're keepers, then I'll recover them.
