I also recently purchased the Asgard X with the integrated DAC. And that one is 32-bit. So when I had the clicking/static sound on the Magni Unity, my first thought was not a bit-depth issue.

The Magni is not just missing information about the DAC. The Magni has 3 gain settings, but the manual and specs only mention high and low gain.

Schiit would greatly benefit from a comparison table that makes it easier to identify the differences among products in the same category. This would be a welcome addition to the Guides tab.

I just got a reply from Schiit regarding the DAC in the Magni Unity: "The Magni Unity can do up to 32/192. Unfortunately no MQA or DSD."

After further troubleshooting, the DAC is crackling any time I play a 192 kHz file. This is consistent across sources and cabling. 96 kHz files are working.

So, I have asked to return the Magni for a new one that works up to spec. This is the 5th piece of equipment I've purchased from Schiit and the first that has an issue.

I like Schiit products but I've had bad luck with quality control. The coaxial rca jack has had problems on every piece of Schiit gear I have - bifrost uber, modi mulitbit, and eitr. In the case of the modi multibit, the coax jack broke completely off the pcb. Never seen anything like it in my 23 years in the hobby.

Schiit asked me check the Magni with 176.4 kHz tracks, and there is a crackling sound with those as well, so it appears not to be an issue with just on of the two clocks in the DAC but rather a systemic defect in the USB receiver.

I did try the Magni with the Eversolo A8 digital output, which is working fine with my Asgard X with built-in DAC. The A8 digital output did nothing to improve the crackling on the Magni with either 176 or 192 kHz files (all via Roon, although I earlier got the same result using Qobuz directly).

Schiit is paying to have this defective Magni returned and replaced.

So, relevant to the topic here, so far so good with customer support.

I have a Mani 1 phono and a Gungnir 1 DAC.  Both are well over 5 years old and sound excellent.  Punch above their weight IMO.

Customer service has been good.  I recently shipped my DAC back because I thought I had a problem. They checked it out found no issues and gave it a clean bill of health for $0...turns out my problem was not the DAC. Doh!

My only gripe is the upgrade path.  When I bought the Gungnir it was billed as upgradable and future proof.  However when the Gungnir 2 came out they discontinued the Gungnir 1...and they do not offer an upgrade from 1 to 2.  Nor do they offer any sort of trade in credit.  So that is disappointing.

All that said the Gungnir 1 still works and sounds great.

There is an upgrade available for the Gungnir 1 listed on the Schiit website. It appears to be a $150 board that upgrades the USB receiver and DAC section. I'm sure you are correct that it is not an upgrade to a Gungnir 2, but they seem to have provided a meaningful upgrade of some type, in their defense.

I have three Schiit devices, including the Mjolnir, a truly high-end headphone amp you can put up against anything out there.

I wonder how many people besides me never would have detected the problem, at least inside a typical warranty period for such a product.  Three year warranty…
