Greetings from old Cape Cod
« on: 18 Aug 2025, 08:07 pm »
Newbie here. Been getting more involved in audio gear after a very long hiatus. I enjoy live music performances, with special interests in acoustic blues, folk and Celtic. My tastes in recorded music run a wider gamut, including jazz and classical.

Other that the occasional new download, I get most of my music in CD form from yard sales, thrift stores, and library book sales.
I rip the cd's to my computer, toss the tracks I don't want, and store the rest on a server and desktop pc.

I'm currently going about improving my playback from the pc, as well as looking for bookshelf speakers and a streamer to playback my collection when I just want to sit and read.

Thanks for letting me in to play!

Suggest looking into active monitors (used by nearly all recording and mixing studios) for their accuracy, dynamics, and remarkably tight/deep bass.  Prices start around $300/pair for quality/medium sized room filling sound (JBL 305 Mk2) up to $15,000/pair for monitors with room EQ, wireless performance, remote control (Dutch & Dutch 8C).

Thanks for all the greetings. I posted looking for information on suitable fabrics for speaker fabric, perhaps in the wrong forum. Any guidance or links to threads on this? Still have one more post before I can search.

Thanks

I would strongly consider a pair of Fritz Carbon speakers.  They are hand built by Fritz.  They sell for about $2800 a pair direct from Fritz.  I have a pair in for review and they are spectacular.  I have to return them unfortunately, wish I could keep them.  They have a warmer tone with a rich and detailed midrange with smooth, deep and punchy bass.  They weigh 30 pounds and are a larger bookshelf.  The pair that I have right now are made from Striped Ebony and are just beautiful.  They use expensive drivers and a very unique crossover.  They are very organic and natural sounding.  Fritz is a musician.

If you are interested in them, I can ask Fritz if he wants me to send them to you. I wrote a review of them on this forum a few weeks ago.  Fritz speakers are very well respected and I have not read a bad review.  These would sell for $5K to 6K in stores.

Thanks for your response. I may get there someday, but I will probably continue my search for vintage gear for a while. I figure if I can bank an amount equal to my yard sale purchases, I'll build up quite the nest egg!
