Let's Resurrect GAS with The Dead!

Well, at long last, let’s get together as the Gateway Audio Society once again, and see The Grateful Dead Movie at the Omnimax.

Cost $16.50/person
Date: Sunday August 24th, 2025
Place: St. Louis Science Center - Omnimax Theater, 5050 Oakland Ave 63110
Time: 5pm

I have scheduled a behind-the-scenes tour at 5pm of the Omnimax Theater with Dave Gioia, theater manager and technical guru of all things Omnimax.  The sound system is unparalleled in the city.

Here’s a link to get tickets.  Please be sure to buy tickets for August 24th at 6pm, but arrive for a 5pm tour.  Parking is included with a ticket purchase.

Please message me privately or comment on this post when you have bought a ticket, so I know how many will be joining us!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again, and, Row G in the theater is where the sound system is calibrated to.

Sorry I can’t make it. Sounds like it would be so good.

Thanks to all who came out!  I'm sorry that tickets were sold out by the time the Day Of came, and some couldn't get into the film (which was quite good), but we had about a dozen attendees:

Adrian W
Chris
Scott C
Lisa C
Jeff K
Jeff's father
David M (Me)
Katie C (my partner)

We gathered out front for a bit, and then Dave Gioia, head projectionist for the Science Center led us up the dual flights of stairs and into the Projection Booth, formerly home to a massive 70mm projector, and now home to an IMAX DOME Laser Projector.

Then, we moved into the cinema itself where Dave had lit up the speakers for us!  We got to see the system that was installed in 2019, and he confirmed my gear spotting-the speaker boxes are Danley, but they are said to have custom modifications by IMAX.  IMAX is known to modify commercially available solutions.  The Danley speakers are really neat because they use a Multiple Entry Horn, which allows for separate bass, mid, and high frequency drivers to feed the same space, and precision manufacturing combined with electronic time alignment makes it work, creating a coherent wavefront in a way other technologies can't.

The subwoofer array consists of Eminence LAB12 subwoofer drivers, four to a cabinet, stacked in a center array in the middle of the cinema.  It is....potent.

Dave ran us a trailer for TENET, which was a truly earth-shaking experience.

Afterward, those of us who got tickets in advance watched The Grateful Dead Movie.

That was really fun, David. Haven’t seen you in forever. Always good to catch up. I also met Chris for the first time, and me and him and Adrian of course had some amazing collard greens, chicken Sammy, and beers at Grace Meat and 3. I forgot to buy tickets … but I’m not much of a dead fan and it might have been too loud. The sound system there is crazy. I wish I could have heard some really well recorded music like 70s progressive country or MPB like Zé Ramalho. Mindblowing on a good stereo. Till next time…
