Drummers going Ape

People may not be aware of just how hard it is to play drums well. Having a good solo is more than just hitting drums but also requires a cool beat.
A good drummer should know rolls and flams, more difficult than you may think as you have to have coordinated thinking. Todays drummer also should be able to do drum rolls with their feet. This requires calf muscles as this takes endurance to pull off. I don't think every drummer can coordinate their feet and their hands, this takes training to learn.
And last, a drummer provides the timing for the band, so they need to know tempo and rhythm to lead the band in a song.

I'll start 'er off with Yanni- Marching Seasons

Here is AC/DC at their peak in 1981 with then drummer Phil Rudd on song. The album Back in Black went on to be the second biggest selling album of all time :drums: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQywr-PBR_o

People do not realize how hard it is to play 1+3 on the kick and 2+4 snare and make it groove Consistently and FEEL GOOD..Steve Gadd ect
All da chops ,speed mean nothing if you can’t stay in the pocket.
Dave Mason((Pink Floyd)Charlie Watts and more.
So many more….
Just so satisfying when the drummer locks in with the music.
The song is the star not the musician.
I will say I love linear drummers,New Orleans second line ect .

Blake Richardson of Between The Buried And Me. On time like a swiss train and plays with lots of good dynamics between the heavy and melodic bits in their songs. Here on YT he plays the song Swim To The Moon which is one of my favorites.

Also on a side note if you guys haven't seen it, there's some super fun videos on YT from Drumeo of drummers sitting in to blindly lay down track to other bands songs. Mike Portnoy playing Taylor Swift was hilarious and Philo Tsoungui from The Mars Volta blindly laying down a version of Rush's Limelight was just amazing.

Nice thread!  I will check out the ones that are unfamiliar to me.  May I also add Ian Paice to the discussion?  His solo on The Mule from Made in Japan is a masterpiece.

Other personal favorites, and I'm probably forgetting more than I'm remembering:

Jack DeJonette
Tony Williams
Brian Blade
Art Blakey
Mickey Hart
Billy Cobham
Elvin Jones
Dave Lombardo

Sorry, couldn't include links.  But all of them are pretty accessible.

Gene Krupa was the first and greatest ape drummer in history.
He invented the drum solo as we know it and doubtful there's ever been any drum solo more exciting than Krupa in early 40s.
