Older movie (2014) starring two time Oscar winner Adrien Brody (he must have been desperate for a paycheck) and Hayden "I'm not sure how I was cast as Anakin Skywalker" Christensen.

I'm not a comic book nerd so knew nothing about Red Sonja. I watched the new 2025 film because the title sounded interesting, maybe there was a brief flicker of memory too because I might have seen a poster for the 1985 "Red Sonja" film.

"Red Sonja" stars Matilda Lutz who has been in 17 films including the 2024 film "Magpie" that stars Daisy Ridley. I wasn't familiar with any of the other actors in "Red Sonja" which is not surprising for a film of this caliber.

At first I was confused by Red Sonja's fish scale armored bikini outfit but then I Googled the comic book source material, her outfit was perfect and I tossed all critical thought out the window and went with it. The film is a hero's journey from a frighted young girl to a vengeful warrior protecting the down trodden. A few giant monsters get in her way too.

Remember how we loved the "Hercules", "Jason and the Argonauts" and "Conan" films? "Red Sonja" is solidly in that film tradition, with better special effects. I have read that Red Sonja is one of Conan's buddies. Hopefully he will make an appearance in future films. Stay tuned... Red Sonja leaves the pub on another adventure in the final scene.

I was 13 years old when I watched those bigger than life heros on the big screen, luckily I can still enjoy these cheesy adventure films. I'm not an cranky old man yet. Now streaming, watch "Red Sonja" with your pre-teen sons and some homemade wooden swords for maximum fun.

I found a really bad movie. The original 1984 "The Toxic Avenger" is easily in the bottom 10 of one of the worst movies ever made. "The Toxic Avenger" has it all: really bad acting, fake fight scenes, offensive stereotypes, sexploitation, juvenile delinquents from hell, random, brutal, bloody killings and torture. This film has absolutely no redeeming value, morally bankrupt and nihilistic too.

But "The Toxic Avenger" is also a hero who cleans up a corrupt town while turning into a tender love story.

"The Toxic Avenger" also reminds me of the action scenes in "Twisted Metal", "Alien:Earth", "The Terminal List", "Peacemaker", and "The Boys." Albeit all with better acting and special effects. "The Toxic Avenger" with it's "anything goes, let's offend everybody" mindset also made "South Park" possible.

Why watch "The Toxic Avenger" now? Because somebody with really bad judgement decided that right now the world needs a real hero, Superman just ain't cutting it.

The new 2025 "The Toxic Avenger" stars Peter Dinklage as the title character, alongside Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon.
Now showing in a theater near you.

Haven't seen it, though I have heard it. Saw one positive review, can't recall where. What in your opinion is the reason/reasons it is so bad?

-dB, who has watched a passel of films recently where I haven't gotten to the halfway mark before bailing on same.

I liked the preview, the actors, so I was looking forward to watch the movie.Unfortunetaly, the movie itself is just gross and gory with ridiculous storyline.I have finished it, because I thought the ending would be interesting, with the twist, but nothing like that.I would be pissed, if I had to pay for this fuckery $25.

Weapons was one of those films I watched without reading any reviews or watching the trailer. I saw the 94% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and jumped right in. The plot certainly was unexpected. The cast is excellent, I liked all the actors in other films.

I kind of enjoyed the film, it reminded me of early gory zombie movies even though "Weapons" doesn't have zombies per se. All logic needs to be suspended watching these types of horror films.

Anyone watching the preview would know "Weapons" is gross and gory. Here it is:

The latest "Toxic Avenger" remake features Peter Dinklage as the title character, alongside Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Winston Gooze (Dinklage) is still a meek downtrodden janitor who is transformed into Toxie by a vat of toxic chemicals. As in the original film, Winston uses his new abilities to fight bullies and corruption with his radioactive mop. Bodies are torn apart in true "B-movie" grossness.

I honestly can't decide which version of Toxic Avenger is the worst, the 1984 original or this 2023 remake. I really had high hopes for this film because of the stellar cast, maybe they intentionally planned to make a bad movie, if that is the case, they succeeded. The 1984 version was more raunchy with some nudity, all the actors in the remake kept their clothes on.

Gather up your pre-teens and teenagers, make some popcorn and watch Toxic Avenger on Halloween night for an evening everyone will remember for a long, long time.

SONNY BOY:

Another older movie... kinda strange one.

Sonny Boy was found as a baby in a car stolen by an low-life crime couple who then raised Sonny Boy as a caged animal who never learned to talk and was only let out of his cage to do violence against the couple's enemies.  The woman in the couple is played by David Caradine in drag... freaking hilarious!

"War Machine" stars Alan Ritchson, best known as playing Reacher in the Amazon series of the same name. The guy is a beast and the perfect hunk to battle an indestructible war machine from outer space.

Alan's character is nameless and goes by his Army Rangers training number 81. While on his teams final training mission in the Colorado mountains they come across a extraterrestrial killing machine with predictable results. "War Machine" has it all: bad ass Ranger trainees that are scared shitless, running, explosions, more running, more explosions and a really cool, really huge robot killing machine that will not give up. The robot killing machine is the mirror image of #81 who won't give up either. One of them has to die. #81 reminded me of Vic Morrow in his war films, a brooding, intense character of few words and definitive actions.

The action scenes are pretty good, I never had the desire to skip forward like I do in many films and streaming series that stretch out what should have been a 4 part series to 8.

"Anaconda" is 100% stupid fun for the whole family. The title explains the entire plot. The first thing I noticed about the film was the clarity and dynamics of the soundtrack, this made me sit up and take notice. "Anaconda" has some serious money invested. The snake was quite well done and the actors were committed to making a fun movie. Jack Black even dialed down his hyper activity which was a relief.

The film even had a few mild jump scares to keep the excitement slithering along.

Some swearing but nothing your 6 year old hasn't heard before.

It is amazing how many shockingly BAD movies Brody has starred in, considering how good of an actor that I believe he is. Kind of a "Mini De Niro", if you will. (Although I'm not sure the latter is even a good actor any more...)

Truth. When I see him as a spokesperson for a product, I want to buy it less than if I saw no advertisement.

So true.  He seems like a nice enough kid, but where's the talent?  I remember asking my nieces matter-of-factly; "Is this guy supposed to be funny or something?", and they looked at me like I was from another planet.

Back when drive-in theaters were thriving they were known for screening some pretty bad "B" movies late into the night. "Zombeavers" would have been shown at 2:00 am after the original "Toxic Avenger."

Six good looking college age students meet up in a cabin in the woods. Unfortunately, unknown to them, a chemical spill from a truck has seeped into the local beaver pond, resulting in a pack of white-eyed, bucktoothed, flat-tailed undead. These unstoppable, ravenous rodents chew through both wood and our hapless college students.

The beavers are unusually smart because they block the road out with a fallen tree, the unprepared students are trapped and no amount of barricades can keep them out.

I really liked that there was no cheap CGI special effects, the beavers were full size animatronic puppets, it made them scarier.

Rated R for profanity, nudity, teenage sex, and gnawing.

I would have given Zombeavers more than two stars but it made the unforgivable sin of no beavers for the first 27 minutes. Once the critters arrive the action takes off for a satisfying 2nd half.

Zombeavers is available on Prime and free on Tubi and Pluto TV. Watch through the credits for a bonus scene.

Just in time for hurricane season, Netflix's latest movie release is "Thrash." What is scarier than a hurricane disaster movie? A hurricane disaster movie with sharks!

"Thrash" stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou.

A category 5 hurricane hits town of Annieville, South Carolina and the storm surge destroys the town's sea wall, causing Annieville to flood and cause massive damage, including breaking open a tanker truck carrying animal blood which draws sharks to the flooded downtown area. The townspeople unable to escape the rising water are trapped, there are shark fins everywhere, chaos ensures and some sharks are well fed.

"Thrash" didn't have much money for special effects so the gore is minimal, much of the action takes place under water, which was not filmed. The viewer has to use their imagination, maybe an unintentional homage to Alfred Hitchcock. The film's budget did have money for blood.

I don't think "Thrash" qualifies for the classic "B" movie status because there are no drugs, no sex and no boobs. I would rate it as PG13 and a good horror film for pre-teen pizza parties and sleepovers. The tension builds in many scenes and there is plenty so scream at, "Thrash" isn't all bad. I watched the film without fast forwarding, always a good sign.

Watch the entire movie in 2 minutes, oops, I mean watch the trailer:

A longtime friend and I like to watch a little trash TV while preparing and eating dinner, something interesting to half watch while chopping and cooking.

"Squatters" definitely qualifies. Each episode is under a 1/2 hour, kind of like the tapas of trash. Flash Shelton, his sister Justice and a small team face tense and sometimes dangerous situations helping families recover their homes from squatters.

Like a tapa, bet you can't watch just one episode.

10 episodes streaming on Hulu on Disney and A&E
