Not quite on topic: My BDP-3 stopped working and went to the Dutch representative of Bryston. I just received the outcome of their efforts. They say that my device seems to have a problem related to the motherboard, and are involved with the Bryston engineers how to solve this, since the motherboards for the BDP-3 are not available anymore. They offer me the choice of buying a new one (reduced price) or wait for the solution the Bryston engineers will come up with.
Now, coincidentally, in this thread I read that James mentioned the lack of the motherboard availability and that Bryston is looking for alternatives. So, my question is, will waiting for this be worth while? I can imagine that the modern motherboards have added advantages (not running that hot, better CPU-performance, NVMe ssds). I am prepared to be patient if these added bonusses are within reach for me...

If a company discontinues their last BDP and do not offer a replacement standalone....plus are "radio silent" on software upgrades ....I would not wait for engineers at Bryston and get the new BDP-3 at a reduced price.

My two cents..

Hi James!

That's kind of you to ask!

Well, some time ago, Chris and I were discussing the possibility of purchasing spare parts for the BDP-2/BDA-2. I think it is particularly important now that the BDP line has been discontinued. I am quite fond of my Bryston digital components and I woild like to keep them operational for as long as possible.

I would really need to talk to someone about it, someone intimately familiar with the BDP-2 and BDA-2 products. At that time, Chris told me that it would most likely be handled through Mike Pickett but like I said, it was some time ago and I don't know if these gentlemen are still with the company.

So, anything you can do to put me in touch with a person or persons with whom I can speak about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

All the best,
Antun

Hi Folks - I will try an get an update for you.

Hi James,

any update on whether the BDP line will receive firmware or software updates, particularly for the ManicMoose interface?
A clear yes or no would be really helpful for planning purposes.
Thanks in advance!

I know they are looking at options for a new version of the BDP digital player with new software but not sure if there are any conclusions at this point.

Sounds like there will be no further firmware updates to Magic Moose for existing BDPs then?

Hi

I would assume that any software going forward would be backwards compatible.

Michel, I lost patience waiting for Bryston to ˋrestoreˋ Tidal many months ago and purchased a temporary streaming transport to play Tidal and Qobuz (among others) and may never go back to anything Moose related.  I couldnˋt be happier and have no need to chase any high price streamers.  WIIm Pro is all you need along side your terrific Bryston gear.

Fellas, I don't want to disappoint anyone but I would like to tell you to manage your expectations. Just because the software is compatible with an older generation of BDP, it does not mean it will run well (or at all) on that machine. BDP is a computer and just like any other computer, it has a CPU and RAM. Alongside other factos, it is these that ultimately determine whether the machine is compatible with the newest software or not. The advantage of Linux-based software is that the demands on hardware are lower than is the case with Windows or MacOS for example. That being said, Bryston did add to the functionality of the software so it is not as easy to power as it once was.

To me, a far greater concern is that Bryston no longer offers any spare parts for their older machines, not even a display. It puts a seriously big question mark onto the longevity of these machines. Bryston may offer a trade-up for a new machine (if it comes to fruition) but my concern is the price of the new machine - which might not even be to your liking.

That's what I think anyway.
