Makes sense if you think about it. Touring an area devastated by floods and tornadoes probably isn't the easiest to fill seats, much like sporting events in LA after fires or Mardi Gras after hurricanes. Looking at it as a purely business standpoint, it makes sense to tour when you can maximize your investment.

Thanks for posting the actual and full statement from the band.  After reading it I see that the article I posted the link to above did not accurately convey the band's message, and also omitted some context, and I now regret having posted the link. 

Personally; I think the whole concept of human activity creating climate change induced weather disasters is not supported by the science but can't countenance misleading articles born of agendas-- from either side of the fence.

Kudos to Steve for still rockin' and touring at 81 years old but this excuse to cancel his tour is ridiculous but that's his choice.
Maybe there's more to it I dunno.

I get it, but otoh music is therapeutic and if I didn't think I was making a positive contribution to the world and individual's lives I would NOT own an audio related business. I think concerts are great and I don't think we should give up on doing human things because of hardship, but there's a time and place for everything. A concert in the midst of disasters, searching for survivors and grieving losses doesn't make sense and can be seen as insensitive. It's like making a joke "too soon". Like everything else in life there's a middle way that makes sense. There's some amount of subjective judgement involved, so I won't criticize SMB's decision on this, but I hope they see what they do as a positive thing, and a perceived lack of sensitivity can be transformed into actually helping those in need if the band donates to charities that help those affected by disasters, then it can be seen as a win for all involved.

With respect to natural disasters being man made, there differing opinions in the scientific community and no way to prove either contention, so any arguments about it are pointless in my view.

One thing that can be said: There are too many "climate activists" that are in it for the money or fame. Living in multiple mansions, flying around in private jets, being chauffeured around in fleets of limos, having conferences in far away lands, eating high priced meals, in order to decide how the peasants (all of us) should live. They want you to live a certain way. They want want you to drive certain vehicles. They want you to eat a certain foods.

I don't know Steve Miller's political opinions. I don't seek it out, nor is it shoved in our faces on the regular like some celebrities. But, if a there are many disasters happening, it is a good idea to delay entertainment for now. It may or may not be because of poor sales, age/health, or whatever is going in their lives. Maybe he was just trying to save face.

First global cooling
Changed to global warming
Now climate change which covers everything

I've been alive a long time and there has always been swings, droughts, floods, disasters, extremes, heat and cold waves and climate changes throughout history.  The difference now is we have 24 hour news cycles, social media and agendas

I do like Steve Miller Band music and I guess they can cancel a tour for whatever reason they like.  Pretty amazing that Steve Miller is 81 and still making great music.

I can understand his thinking.
I had always wanted to retire and see all 48 lower states on a motorcycle.
I'd plan it around the weather, of course.  Hit the northern states in the Summer and work my way down in the Winter.
After seeing the out of control fires, the flooding, tornados touching down for 100 miles at a time, the intense wind storms and all the rest, that idea has gone out the window.
For retiring and moving, the weather is a major consideration. 
An area I was considering was burned to a crisp last year, washed away this year.  Glad I stayed put!

In the case of a band, they have to book in advance and are locked into the schedule so they have to be there or refund the money.
Who is bankrolling the tour?
A few years back Robert Fripp said he decided not to put King Crimson back together and tour the US as the cost would have been over $1,000,000 and he would be the one putting up the money.  He said it was too risky so forget that idea.

For anyone interested in our changing climate, this should not come as any surprise, it's been known for decades what is coming.
The decision was made to launch a PR campaign and here we are.
For those who say no no, the executives in the boardrooms are kindly people who would never do a thing like that to us, everything is perfectly normal, well...
