3D Holographic Soundstage
« on: 15 Jul 2025, 06:26 pm »
Hello Audiophiles!

I'm curious to know what your experience has been with a 3D holographic soundstage. Let me know what speakers and amplification you used to get the most holographic experience. Also, what is your favorite song you use to demonstrate an immersive soundstage.

Looking forward to your responses!

Thanks.

If you want a 3D soundstage dont use a boxed loudspeaker, they amit sound only to front, instead use a Open Baffle or planar speaker with space around as below:

This is a inexpensive DIY project from an AC member,
It have only four (4) parts:
Eminence Alpha15A + 4.7mH + Visaton B200 and a MDF baffle.

Other option are the Lii Audio F15 FR driver $399/pair, not each.
Here Decware OB with the Lii Audio F15 driver:

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair, pair not each) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

My personal choice is the Lii F18 in Single Driver configuration, but if you make question of wanting a 2-Way speaker you may want a bigger woofer than the Alpha15A, so there are W18 inches and W21 inches from Lii Audio, personally I dont like these two VCs woofers, they are hard to drive with a small tube amp.

My best examples are recordings by Grace Slick- Dreams - El Diablo and Jean Michel Jarre - Metamorphosis - Give Me a Sign. Even without expensive equipment, if you listen carefully you can hear the 3D effect in the recordings. In my case though I wasn't really aware of it until my gear was upgraded.
In the song Give Me a Sign, as I recall, there is a Ghostly like voice of higher frequency layered in the background, it's really cool. There are other songs on the album that uses this effect but not as apparent. El Diablo by Grace Slick uses kind of panning left right that gives the song a 3D effect.
My equipment is Bryston SP2 processor, 2 - 3B/2 amps, Model T passive speakers and Paradigm Studio 100 v2, Monster power conditioner that keeps the voltage at 120 and a Yamaha mixer MG-10. I also listen at SPL 92 - 95 decibels.

I also experienced a 3D like effect playing the song Harmonica from the movie Once a Time in the West. This was more like notes hanging in space. Also Bryston gear. :smoke:

Since nobody else is chiming in, I'll offer another song that IMO sounds 3D. Now I mentioned this song once before and somebody commented that they could not hear what I claimed.
Okay if you have the Pink Floyd Pulse dvd, on the song Comfortably Numb when David Gilmour is doing the solo. You can see he is moving his guitar back & forth. Here he is creating what I call the siren effect, at least it sounds like that in my room.
I also have the CD version which IMO has better resolution than the concert dvd. Don't know if it's available in bluray.

In terms of relatively affordable gear that i've owned, the best sound staging/imaging i've experienced was from an older setup with Infinity Renaissance 90's. The Rens were underpowered driven by my Classe Cap-2100 integrated, but still showed their potential with fast, airy mids and highs, excellent stage width (incl: off-axis response), depth and imaging, as well as tight, punchy bass from the 10" Watkins dvc woofers. With a 200w amp, or strong 100w amp like the Coda Model 11, the Rens would have had even deeper bass and opened up more.

Re: test cd's, i'd probably reach for blues albums like Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" (UHQCD), Anne Bisson "Blue Mind" (UHQCD) and Tony Bennett "Playing with my friends", classic rock such as Pink Floyd "Pulse", and some classical music.

I have the KEF R3 Meta speakers with KC92 sub driven by an Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated. The speakers are toed-in slightly - I experimented until I got a nice soundstage. I used to have KEF 103/4 speakers before and so knew that KEF does a good job with the soundstage.

One thing that can help with soundstage is a bit of eq to compensate for room resonances, using something like mini-dsp.

George Benson's Giblet Gravy (remaster) is a good demo album. Also Sprach from Deodato's Prelude album (also features Billy Cobham and Stanley Clarke) is another. Get the remaster if possible.

Can't remember where I read about this album, (probably NRD) but amazing room acoustics and depth of soundstage.

Oscar Motet Choir - Cantate Domino, specifically tracks 11 (O Holy Night) and 13 (Silent Night).
