New Kindle Help
« on: 10 Jul 2025, 12:06 am »
I have the newest Kindle. Amazon chat and telephone are no help. A lot of wasted time there. Google is no help. I want to "remove from device" books but keep them in my library. I have followed all instructions and they supposedly lead me to menus that include "remove from device". This was very easy to do on my ancient Kindle. The new one is definitely not an improvement. I wish my old one still worked.

I never see the option to "remove from device". I see "delete permanently" and "remove download". No option to "remove from device". My experience is "remove download" only saves storage space but leaves the book on the Kinde in the list or other display mode.

I accumulate too many books to keep them all displayed on my Kindle. I am happy to keep them under "content" on my desktop and retrieve them as needed.

If you are on the Library screen (vs. the "Home" screen), you can click the three dots next to any book and choose "Remove Download"

This clears the book's file from the on-kindle flash drive to save space. However, the is still visible in the Library in case you want to download it in the future. By default, the Library shows both the books that have been downloaded to the Kindle and the books that you have purchased but that are not downloaded to the Kindle.

If you want to only see the books that are downloaded to the Kindle, you can filter the Library view to show only those (among other options).

To filter the Library view, press the little settings icon just below the search bar at the top left of the Library screen. It looks likes three lines with a dot on each line (at different positions).

A "Filters" screen will pop up from the bottom, and the first option is "Downloaded". Selecting that will show only the books in the Library that are downloaded to the Kindle. At the top of the Library list it will show "Downloaded" to indicate that the list in the Library is being filtered to show only that subset of titles. Clicking on the X next to "Downloaded" will remove the filter.

Presumably they changed how this works so that it's easier to see all of your purchased books on the Kindle (whether downloaded or not) while also preserving to the ability to only see what is currently on the device (amont several other filter options).

newzooreview,

Thank you for your response. I am confused how the filter would work. When I get a new free Kindle book it shows up in my list but it is not downloaded until I click on it. So if I use a filter how would new books show up?

FYI, in my hours spent on chat and on the phone, no Amazon associate recommended that method.

I am so disappointed Amazon removed the simple to use option that was on my older Kindle. I am seriously confused why they did that. Unless it was to "encourage" people to permanently delete books they had paid for. That would require a new purchase to get the books back.

When you buy a book, it automatically downloads to the Kindle (at least that's what just happened when I tried it). So, having the "Downloaded" filter enabled does not seem to create an issue finding new purchases.

That is not how it works on my Kindle (the latest model). The book cover appears but I have to tap on it to download.

My Kindle is not one of the new models, but the operating system on the Kindle is the current one. I just checked and it says it is up to date and running OS 5.18.2

I just double-checked the behavior I'm seeing. I tried it again on four different books, with the "Downloaded" filter on the Library view on my Kindle. In each case, when I bought a book on the website on my computer, the book appeared in my Library and the Kindle showed "Downloading…" under the book title for one or two seconds as it downloaded the newly purchased book.

I did a little searching, and this auto-download after purchasing behavior seems to apply to all Kindles if a) the Kindle is designated as the default Kindle device in the Amazon account (Your Account: scroll down to "Digital content and devices" then select "Devices" and click Kindle to show the Kindles registered to the Amazon account, b) Sync is turned on in the Amazon Account and on the Kindle, and c) the Kindle is connected to WiFi.

Sync should be turned on by default on the Kindle (under Settings-->Device Options) and on the Amazon Account (on the Devices screen described above, there is a small "Preferences" label near the top of the screen to switch from the Devices list to the Preferences regarding Devices.)

It seems that if all the setting match up, this should work on any Kindle with the current Kindle OS.

Thanks. I think I have all that. I only have one device and new book titles load automatically. Content does not load until I click and request "download".

I just bought the latest Kindle Paperwhite SE today, so this will be helpful.  I already own the Kindle Oasis which is a little slow.  Going to give the SE to my wife.
